Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most important voices in American history because he didn’t just speak about justice, he demanded it through courage, peace, and truth. At a time when segregation and racism were openly written into law, Dr. King stood before the nation and reminded people that equality was not a gift to be handed out, but a right already promised. He believed deeply in nonviolence, not because he was weak, but because he understood that lasting change could only come from moral strength and unity. His words made people feel seen, especially those who had been ignored for generations, and his leadership helped change laws, minds, and the direction of the country. If Dr. King were alive today, he would strongly disagree with the division, hatred, and injustice we continue to see. He warned us about silence in the face of wrongdoing, about valuing comfort over courage, and about judging people by anything other than their character. His message was never just for the past; it was a challenge for every generation to do better, love harder, and stand together as one. They didn’t give Dr. King a holiday out of love. They were forced to. 🖤✊🏾 MLK was assassinated in 1968 — yet America dragged its feet for 15 YEARS before making his birthday a federal holiday. Why? Because they loved a sanitized King, not the man who called out racism, war, and economic injustice. Enter Stevie Wonder. 🎶🖤 In 1980, he dropped “Happy Birthday” — not a feel-good song, but a cultural weapon. He marched. He organized. He helped collect 6 MILLION signatures. He made the country celebrate King before the government would. Even then, politicians fought it. In 1983, members of Congress — including John McCain — voted AGAINST MLK Day, calling King “controversial” and whining about “cost.” Let that sit. 🧠 The bill passed anyway. Reagan signed it (after opposing it). First observed in 1986 — and some states STILL refused. South Carolina didn’t fully honor it until 2000. So miss me with the fake love once a year. MLK Day exists because Black pressure, Black culture, and Black persistence made it unavoidable. The holiday wasn’t given. It was TAKEN. 🖤🔥✊🏾 #MLKDay #BlackHistory #TruthOverComfort #StevieWonder #UncomfortableFacts

Dr. King taught us that silence is not neutrality—it is complicity. On this MLK Day, we recommit to nonviolent resistance, to dignity, and to justice for all. The fight continues. #MLKDay

This interview took place May 8, 1967, shortly after Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his April 4th Beyond Vietnam speech at Riverside Church in New York City, when he was facing intense backlash for publicly opposing the Vietnam War and intentionally naming militarism, racism, and economic exploitation as morally intertwined crises that demanded a reckoning from the American conscience. Today, as families are terrorized by ICE raids, as migrants are scapegoated for political gain, as women’s bodily autonomy is stripped away, and as food assistance is cut while corporations feast—King’s words still press on us. This is not accidental. It is systemic. MLK Day is a summons. A call to prick the conscience of America—to tell the truth about who we are and who is being crushed in the process. Justice comes through courage, truth-telling, and collective action. May we be the disturbance King called for. May we refuse amnesia. May we love this country enough to confront it. ✊🏾🖤

Today, Karen Bass, Mayor of Los Angeles, didn’t just attend the parade — she marched with the people. Walking alongside the community during the Official MLK Day Parade is a powerful reminder that Dr. King’s legacy lives in leadership that listens, shows up, and moves forward together. This is what solidarity looks like. This is leadership in action. 📍 South Los Angeles 🗓 January 19, 2026 #mlkdayparade

Today, even in my own life…things feel especially heavy. American History is being rewritten, Black History is being attacked and attempts to erase it are rampant. Fear is paralyzing so many of our neighbors as their rights and safety are at risk. My story and those of so many —known and unknown — and the incredible sacrifices that built this democracy and a great nation are disgracefully being taken out of history books. As long as I am here I will continue to remind, share and fight for history to never be forgotten. Today, on Dr. MLK Day, I am reminded again that we must stand up for what is right and speak out against what is absolutely wrong. Today I ask all of you to be reminded of Dr. King’s legacy and words. Listen carefully. 🙏🏽Rb “Because there is something wrong…our struggle must continue” — MLK
