MAVisiting one of the oldest and most remote monasteries in the Himalayas 📿🇮🇳👇🏻
📍 Phuktal Monastery is one of the most remote monasteries in the Himalayas. Perched dramatically on a cliff above the Tsarap River in the Zanskar region of Ladakh, this 2,500-year-old monastery seems to grow directly out of the mountain itself.
🥾 Getting here isn’t easy. There are no roads to the monastery. The final stretch requires a hike along a narrow trail carved into the canyon walls, following the turquoise river deep into the Zanskar valley.
🪨 The monastery is built around a natural cave where, according to tradition, sages and scholars meditated long before the monastery existed. Over centuries, whitewashed rooms, prayer halls, and monk quarters were constructed around the cave, forming the unique honeycomb structure that clings to the cliffside today.
🧘♂️ Around 70 monks live here, studying, praying, and maintaining a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Young monks also attend the monastery school, where days are filled with chanting, study, and daily chores.
🌊 Just below the monastery, the Tsarap River cuts through the canyon, its constant flow echoing through the valley. The sound of the river mixes with the wind and distant chants from inside the monastery walls.
❄️ Winter transforms this place completely. Heavy snow isolates the monastery from the outside world, trails disappear, and supplies must be carefully managed. Yet life continues, quietly, in one of the most isolated spiritual communities in the Himalayas.

It is an ancient Nabatean city carved into stone over 2,000 years ago, known for its incredible architecture and role as an important trading center
🏛️The Monastery, known as Ad Deir, is one of the largest monuments in Petra and sits high above the valley, reached by climbing around 800 steps. It was believed to have been used for religious gatherings and ceremonies, and today it’s one of the most striking and peaceful spots in the entire site; absolutely worth the walk in the dark to make it here for sunrise 😅

Happy Holy Week! Monks are called to obedience, even when they are told something they don’t like to hear (like not getting Easter baskets). The Rule of St. Benedict says, “They no longer live by their own judgment, giving in to their whims and appetites; rather they walk according to another’s decisions and directions”. Although this sounds binding, it is quite the opposite. It allows the monastic greater freedom to pursue the heart of God. Just like Christ learned obedience upon the cross, so too does the monk within the monastery. Let us conjoin our wills to His.
