🔨 Learning about fractions needs to start with hands on tools! Our kids need to SEE why 1/2 is equivalent to 2/4 before they learn the other methods for simplifying fractions. My favorite manipulative are these paper fraction strips (see my previous video for a tutorial on how to make them) and plastic fraction tiles (the strips as well as the circular tiles).

Fractions can feel really abstract for students… until they can see and touch the math. Research consistently shows that hands-on manipulatives help students build deeper conceptual understanding, especially with fraction concepts. When students can line up fraction tiles, compare sizes, and physically manipulate the pieces, they start to understand why one fraction is greater than another instead of just memorizing rules. This is why I almost always start fraction lessons with concrete models before moving to numbers and symbols. When the concept clicks first, the procedures make so much more sense. Hands-on math for the win. 🙌 #elementarymath #fractions #mathmanipulatives #mathteacher #3rdgrademath 4thgrademath
