I had no idea how all encompassing it was until I went through it. The pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, breastfeeding, the love for my daughter, and everything in between. It all came with unknown surprises and life altering experiences. Just know whatever you’re feeling during these phases is normal. Don’t let society pressure you into thinking you need to “bounce back” to the person you once were or the body you once had or the productivity you once were capable of. Move forwards knowing you are evolving and changing. Matrescence (the process of becoming a mother and the emotional, psychical and physiological changes that come with it) is the most difficult and beautiful thing I’ve ever experienced, and I’m definitely not interested in bouncing back any time soon. Or ever! #matrescence #motherhood

is it selfish to want to be told you're doing a good job as a mom? i've been told yes. that if you wanted kids, you just do the job. no validation required. i disagree. validation isn't about ego. it's about visibility. and so much of what moms actually do is invisible. the unseen parts are the loneliest parts. and nobody is talking about them enough. that's why I'm making this show. episode 1 is out now 🤍 watch the full podcast episode now on YouTube - link in bio

Say it with us: MATRESCENCE! ✨ Ever heard of it? Our friend and OBGYN @onseyo of @goldenhour.fm breaks down a term we all should have been taught in school but probably never heard of. It may help explain the very experience many of you are going through right now… Matrescence is the physical, emotional, and psychological transition a woman goes through as she becomes a mother. Not unlike adolescence, it’s complex, messy - and completely transformative. Let’s start normalizing the word and the experience: 🗣️ “I wasn’t just tired. I was deep in matrescence and trying to figure out who I was becoming.” 🗣️ “No one told me matrescence would hit harder than postpartum.” How was the matrescence process for you? Let’s talk about it ⬇️ #Matrescence #BirthFUND

I know we talk about “pre and post baby life”, but I never saw enough discussion around the grief I felt during matrescence when I was thick in the experience (even though I loved my kids and was grateful for them!!!!). I do feel lie it’s a natural emotion that we need to talk about more because the reality is, you do lose an old version of yourself, and it’s okay to grieve that and also be grateful. I share these as a mom who has lived both the darkest and the most peaceful versions of it: 1. If you feel off, you’re not imagining it. Postpartum hormones are powerful. Postpartum fog is REAL. The sleep deprivation. The massive identity shit. And if you have old wounds or unresolved trauma, this season can bring them right to the surface. That doesn’t mean you’re broken. It means your body and nervous system are adjusting to something enormous. 2. If your baby only wants to sleep on you, it’s because they’re a baby. You are not creating bad habits. You are not doing it wrong. You are their regulation. Of course they want you. This is biology, not failure. 3. You can be deeply loved and still feel lonely. No one prepares you for the identity shift. The invisible labor. The way your world gets smaller before it expands again. You can adore your baby and still miss pieces of who you were. That doesn’t make you ungrateful. It makes you human. 4. Postpartum is not 6 weeks. It’s not 3 months. And for my working mamas, it doesn’t end when we go back to work. It’s at MINIMUM two years. Sometimes longer. Two years of transitioning, transforming, finding your balance and rhythm, finding you. Give👏🏾your👏🏾self👏🏾grace👏🏾AND👏🏾TIME👏🏾 I share this as a mom who has experienced extreme postpartum depression and anxiety… and as a mom currently walking through a peaceful postpartum season. Both were real. Both are valid. If you’re in the thick of it — you are not crazy. You are not dramatic. And you are not alone. 🤍 #postpartumjourney #postpartumsupport #newmomlife #matrescence #motherhoodunfiltered

MATRESCENCE: THE PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND EMOTIONAL PROCESS OF BECOMING A MOTHER. For 50 years, women have been tirelessly researching, studying, writing, and campaigning for matrescence, one of the most profound transformations to occur in human biology. But half a century since Dana Raphael coined the word, it’s still missing from major dictionaries. That ends now. Because when we don’t name what happens to women, we don’t understand it. We don’t fund it, we don’t support it, and we can’t prepare for it. Help us add matrescence to the dictionary. Help us make matrescence mainstream. #MakeMatrescenceMainstream

No one warned me that motherhood could make me pull away from the person I loved most. When I was a new mom, there were evenings my partner would walk through the door and something in me would close. I wasn’t angry in a way I could explain. I wasn’t distant because I didn’t love him. I was empty in a way I didn’t yet have language for. At the time, I thought something was wrong with our relationship. What I later understood was this: I was moving through matrescence — the identity and nervous-system shift of becoming a mother — and I had been holding everything all day long. Not just the baby. But the tracking. The anticipating. The remembering. The constant internal “on-ness.” By the time evening came, there was nothing left to offer — not because I didn’t care, but because I hadn’t been cared for. This wasn’t about my partner failing me. It wasn’t about love disappearing. It was about unmet needs I didn’t yet know how to name. In matrescence, emotional depletion often shows up as irritation, withdrawal, or numbness — especially toward the people we need most. Not because they’re the problem, but because they feel safe enough to receive what we’ve been holding in. What changed things wasn’t fixing my attitude or pushing myself to “do better.” It was learning to pause… and ask: What does this part of me need right now? Sometimes it was quiet. Sometimes space. Sometimes to be witnessed instead of helped. I wasn’t cold because I didn’t love. I was cold because I needed warmth. If this feels familiar, know this: you’re not broken, ungrateful, or failing at partnership. You’re in a transition that deserves language, support, and care. And you don’t have to carry it alone. ✨ If this resonated, save this for later or DM me “support” — this is the work I hold space for. #matrescence #motherhoodidentity #witnessedmotherhood
