I am struggling and it’s okay to talk about it. I disappear from these apps a lot because I’m led to believe only unrealistic great lifestyles are acceptable to post but actually, so many of those people are struggling with mental health problems and no one is talking about how there actually feeling. If anyone is struggling my dm’s are always open no matter how big or small your problem, I’m here. I’ve lost over 20+ people in the past 10 years because they didn’t feel heard. That cycle ends here. We try to write the end of the story when we are only in the middle of the chapter. But here is the truth: God does not give you the strength to handle the “What Ifs” of next year. Let’s do the same for our psychological problems. In 2020 it’s time we start giving mental health the same respect that we give to physical health. Both are a part of being human. One day we will be able to talk about visiting our therapist as openly as we talk about GP appointments. 5 things I am doing to help lessen the symptoms: 1. I take Prozac for my anxiety. Do I think medications have solved all my problems? Absolutely not. Do I think they lessen my symptoms and help prevent me from actually drowning during this season with little kids? Yes. 2. I limit my alcohol (& caffeine) consumption. I used to drink nearly every night in an attempt to cope with the anxiety. But what I learned was that alcohol actually increases anxiety, and by using it to “cope,” I was just perpetuating the cycle. Less caffeine is self explanatory! 3. I started taking my iron supplements! I have had very low iron for quite a few years, but taking the pill on an empty stomach, with vitamin c, 45 min before my morning coffee…yeah that made me too anxious (IYKYK). Well guess what I recently found out? Low iron can contribute to ADHD symptoms! You need enough iron to be able to convert your protein into dopamine. So low iron can equal more fatigue, brain fog, and trouble focusing. 4. I lowered the bar for myself. Like seriously, I cut all the things out that were not absolutely vital to myself and my family and I have to daily choose to reject the guilt. I will never be the team mom for a sport again, I’m sorry but also I’m not sorry 😬 5. I am slowly establishing a “system” for myself while recognizing that it will never be perfect. I didn’t realize I had ADHD until I became a mom to a kid who was diagnosed with it. And even though I don’t have a formal diagnosis, it doesn’t hurt to try out new systems that work with my brain instead of against it. TBD what works best for me, I am continuing to figure that out!
