It’s not uncommon for my clients to start a session saying, “Honestly, I’m having a pretty good week.” And that can be true. But once you slow down and once your nervous system realizes it’s safe, you often discover that it’s not quite that simple. The beauty is, you don’t have to arrive with an agenda. You’re allowed to show up not even knowing how you feel or even convinced there’s “nothing to talk about.” Emotional honesty takes energy. And it can take time within the session even just to know how you’re feeling that day. If you leave a session feeling like you need the rest of the day to recover, nothing is wrong with you. You bottle up any discomfort so you can make it through the week. 📉Weekend arrives. You feel psychologically safe and you let down your guard. The pent-up stress from the week is released which could make you feel more anxious, exhausted or depleted. Here’s the thing: Your brain is built like a dam. When you’re facing acute stress, you keep it together at all costs. Once the “threat” has passed and you’re feeling calm, the dam breaks and your pent-up emotions come to the surface. If your weekends don’t look a movie, this could be why. There’s nothing wrong with you. Your stressed brain is working exactly as it should. How can you stop a Delayed Stress Reaction?
