PLMost swimwear is made from plastic—nylon, spandex, polyester, or recycled polyester . It sheds tiny microplastic fibers every time we swim, wash, or wear it. 💔 These particles slip are too tiny to be caught by filters & end up in our oceans, harming marine life & entering our food chain.
We don’t have many alternatives for swimwear yet, though the innovation is certainly coming! (Follow to hear about some projects in this space & I will share all I learn about new materials! Please comment any you love. I also lovvvveee when you dm me cool things you see! Thank you!
If you’re not ready to give up your favourite bikini (same), here’s how to extend its life & reduce pollution:
1. Gentle rinse after swimming to wash away salt, chlorine, & sunscreen that break down the fabric. I do this when I shower after the beach.
2. Hand wash only, using cold water & gentle natural detergent—machines cause unnecessary friction that release more plastic microfibres & also cause the material to break down faster.
3. Never wring it out—just gently squeeze excess water. Any unnecessary stretching of the fabric causes microplastics to shed & the suit will lose its shape sooner.
4. Dry flat in the shade to prevent sun damage & stretching.
5. Skip the dryer—heat speeds up microplastic shedding & ruins the elastic.
6. Store flat to keep its shape between swims.
