Today, DJI released the long anticipated DJI Mini 5 Pro. The Mini 5 Pro will undoubtedly become a very popular choice amongst aspiring & experienced drone pilots given it’s a new addition to the least restrictive drone category as a sub-250 gram drone (C0 category). DJI Mini 5 Pro packs a few major improvements that make it a much more worthwhile upgrade this time around compared to its latest iteration. I had the chance to test the Mini 5 Pro several weeks before its release, allowing me to thoroughly find out what this little powerhouse has to offer. I took it out to explore some of my favourite areas while also facing some of the rougher weather Iceland has to offer. Aerial Northern Lights photography on the new @djiglobal Mini 5 Pro 🚁 A few weeks ago, I visited the Highlands of Iceland to test out the Mini 5 Pro's low-light capabilities. The almost perfect conditions lined up: a clear sky and no wind, allowing long-exposure photography while hovering mid-air in complete darkness. Only two things were missing: a full moon and a blanket of snow for the ultimate natural night illumination. But I still decided to give it a go. The Northern Lights were so strong and clearly visible to the naked eye that the whole landscape lit up. Truly mind-blowing. I also decided to test the video capabilities in pitch-black darkness at ISO 12.800 in full auto mode, as seen in the first and last video clips. Although not as good as the photos, it’s still crazy impressive. My key takeaway points after testing the photography capabilities of the Mini 5 Pro: ✅ Pros: - 12-bit RAW Color Depth in photography. Mini 4 Pro only had 10-bit. Note: This applies only to the standard 12MP mode, not the 50MP quad-bayer mode. - Improved high ISO performance in photo mode: You can now shoot at ISO 400 with noise performance very similar to that at ISO 100. This is a big step up for low-light photography, and when you need a higher shutter speed in windy conditions. ❌ Cons:  - Only 12MP Sensor: 12MP is quite low for photography and has its limits, especially for large printing. I would have loved to see at least a 20MP sensor, like the Air 2S’s 1-inch sensor. - Quad-Bayer mode: The 50MP mode uses processing that reduces the color depth from 12-bit to 10-bit, a significant trade-off that results in the loss of billions of colors. With that, it sacrifices the tonal data essential for complex post-processing. With only 10-bit colors, you introduce increased risk of banding and noticeably worse performance in low light, including higher color noise and artifacts. ✍🏼👇🏼 In conclusion, the Mini 5 Pro finally introduces higher bit depth in RAW images on the Mini Series, after years of being only 10-bit. It is a great upgrade, and I hope DJI will set its standard to 12-bit (or higher) in the future.
