CSModerna CEO Stéphane Bancel on Wednesday defended his company’s plan to quadruple the price of its COVID-19 vaccine, telling senators it faces “increased complexity and risk” as the pandemic moves into a new phase.
The Biden administration is preparing to end the public health emergency in May, meaning price negotiations for vaccines will shift to insurers and other purchasers instead of just the federal government.
Demand for vaccines is also declining sharply because of built-up product inventories and higher levels of population immunity from high rates of vaccination and natural infection.
Against that backdrop, Moderna is preparing to charge as much as $130 per dose in the U.S., well above the roughly $26 the government paid for each of the latest booster doses.
Senate Health Committee Chair Bernie Sanders (I-VT), noting the government help the company received to develop the vaccine through the National Institutes of Health and Operation Warp Speed, pressed the CEO on whether his company would reconsider.
“Given the fact that you have made billions of dollars and your company has made huge profits, on behalf of the taxpayers of this country, will you reconsider your decision to quadruple the price of the vaccine?” he asked.
Mr. Bancel told the chairman the vaccine wasn’t the same product as in the early days of the pandemic, and the company would now have to provide single-dose vials or pre-filled syringes of its vaccine when it moves into the commercial market, compared to filling 10-dose vials for government procurement.
“We’re expecting a 90% reduction in demand,” he said. “As you can see, we’re losing economies of scale. We must deal with supply chain complexity. And we must assume the wastage risk and cost that the U.S. government used to assume.”

ALMODERNA FUELING BIG HEADLINES TODAY REGARDING A VACCINE FOR KIDS <6. Will they deliver on the hype??
Quick highlights from the data presented:
- In a clinical trial of nearly 7,000 kids between the ages of 5 months to 6, a two-dose, 25ug (1/4 the adult dose) vaccine series provided a similar antibody response to adults. <-- this was the primary endpoint. The goal.
- There were no serious adverse events reported, including no cases of myocarditis.
- The vaccine efficacy, was around 40% at preventing symptomatic covid-19 infections. This sounds low but remember the clinical trial took place during the omicron surge (unlike data from previous two-dose trials) AND a trial is underway to provide a third shot in this population. Which will likely take that efficacy way higher.
- Furthermore, if we isolated the efficacy to only look at serious illness, it would likely be much higher. But because of the size of the study, it's hard to make strong conclusions.
- This still is is an amazing step forward for the 20 million or so kids under the age of six, especially those who have underlying medical conditions.
- And just because Moderna is submitting data, Nothing is guaranteed. It's the job of committees such as the FDAs VRBPAC and the CDCs ACIP to thoroughly review the data.
- No one would give the approval to a vaccine they wouldn't administer to their own children. Rest assured.
