If you have that feeling of dread at the week ahead and you feel low on energy, here are a few tips on ways to generate energy and shift that feeling. • Make sure you prioritise enough time to sleep as much as you need. Generating energy and shifting low mood is much harder if you haven’t had enough sleep. • Move your body. When you do what your body was built to do it has a significant positive impact on energy levels, mood and how we manage stress that day. You don’t have to run a marathon, you can dance around your house to your favourite music or speed up your dog walk. Moving generates energy so this is a top way to shift that feeling. • Call a friend and make some plans for the week that you can look forward to. • Spend some time reflecting on what might be triggering that feeling. Is it something that can be changed? Is it associated with anxiety? Or maybe your job is not right for you. Whatever it is, understanding the cause can help us to plan to make changes where possible. • Try to stay in the moment. Dread can often arise when we are anticipating the pressures of the week ahead. But it’s not here yet, so refocus your attention on the here and now to give yourself a mental break from it. You can use mindfulness to help you practice the skill of choosing where you focus your attention. • Add in some joy for the week’s agenda. If you dread the week because school or work is boring, then add in something each day that you can enjoy. • Remind yourself of why you are doing the thing you dread. Reconnecting with our values and why we are doing something, can help us cope with the fears or discomfort that surround it. School may feel boring right now, but you have dreams of becoming a doctor in future, or talking in front of the class fills you with fear now but you want to master public speaking, so it’s worth facing.
