As focus returns to Iran’s clerical leadership, we revisit a moment from the India Today Conclave 2012, where author Salman Rushdie said he did not want his moral sense dictated by “mullahs, priests or ayatollahs.” The remark came decades after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a 1989 fatwa calling for his death over ‘The Satanic Verses’. In 2022, Rushdie was stabbed during a lecture in New York, losing sight in one eye, underscoring how the shadow of that decree continues to shape his life.

Das ist keine Zuspitzung, sondern ein öffentlicher Aufruf zur Tötung. Diese Parolen wurden in Deutschland gerufen – in einem Staat, der vielen der Beteiligten Schutz gewährt hat. Asylrecht, Bleibeperspektiven und politische Freiheiten sind hier Ergebnis politischer Kämpfe, auch linker Bewegungen. Genau gegen diese wird nun offen der Tod gefordert. Wer so spricht, sucht keine Auseinandersetzung. Todesparolen markieren die Grenze vom Politischen zur Gewalt. Rechtlich ist das eindeutig strafbar. Dass die Polizei vor Ort nicht einschritt, ist daher erklärungsbedürftig. #monarchistensindeinegefahr
