A muscle cramp is a sudden and painful tightening of a muscle that happens when the muscle contracts on its own and doesn’t relax. It usually affects the legs or feet, especially during exercise or while sleeping. Cramps happen when the muscle fibers become overstimulated or fatigued, often because of dehydration, loss of electrolytes, overuse, or poor circulation. When this occurs, the signals between nerves and muscles misfire, making the muscle lock up temporarily. Stretching the affected area, massaging it, or staying hydrated can help relieve the cramp, and keeping your body hydrated and muscles flexible helps prevent it from happening again.
