Before she debuts with the NAC Orchestra, here’s how @emma_stevens_music introduced herself to the world. In 2019, 16 years old, she sat down with her music class and sang “Blackbird” entirely in Mi’kmaw. The video went up on YouTube to mark the UN’s International Year of Indigenous Languages. Then it took off… @paulmccartney saw it, and from onstage at his concerts, he told audiences to look it up. But the song was never about going viral. “Our language is such a beautiful thing,” said Emma, “and not a lot of people hear it.” Lennon and McCartney’s song, written in the spirit of protest and resilience, found a new home in Mi’kmaw, and felt somehow like it always belonged there. This spring, Emma joins NACO for tour dates including a homecoming concert in Eskasoni, April 14th. It’s a full-circle moment: back in 2017, a teenage Emma volunteered at the NAC Orchestra’s first-ever concert in her community. Now she’ll be on stage. ___ Emma Stevens partagera bientôt la scène avec l’Orchestre du CNA. Voici la vidéo qui l’a fait connaître. En 2019, elle réalisait avec les élèves de son cours de musique un enregistrement de « Blackbird », le grand classique des Beatles, entièrement en mi’kmaw. La vidéo a été publiée sur YouTube et a remporté un succès immédiat. Des centaines de milliers de personnes l’ont regardée… dont un certain Paul McCartney, qui l’a mentionnée sur scène lors d’un de ses concerts. Mais le but n’a jamais été de créer une chanson virale. « Notre langue est tellement belle », explique Emma Stevens, « et si peu de gens l’entendent. » La chanson de Lennon et de McCartney, écrite dans un esprit de protestation et de résilience, trouve un nouveau souffle en mi’kmaw, comme si elle avait été écrite pour cette langue. Ce printemps, Emma Stevens se joint à l’OCNA pour une série de concerts sur la côte est du pays, dont un arrêt dans sa ville natale d’Eskasoni, le 14 avril. Une belle façon de boucler la boucle : en 2017, Emma, alors adolescente, était bénévole pour le tout premier concert de l’Orchestre du CNA dans sa communauté. Here are some of my takeaways as we gear up for our concerts in Japan: ✨It’s so fun to try new tasty food AND it helps to find an easy meal option that is good for concert days 🍽️ ✨Time off is great for being a tourist/experiencing the cities AND it’s important to let yourself actually rest when you need it 😴 ✨Touring with an orchestra is such an amazing experience and privilege AND it’s completely mentally and physically exhausting 💕 Excited for the week ahead! 😊

Now she’s taking the stage with the NAC Orchestra—and she joined CBC Cape Breton’s Wendy Bergfeldt to talk about the NAC Orchestra bringing its East Coast tour to her hometown. ___ Certaines retrouvailles revêtent une signification particulière 🎻🏒 Lors de notre première visite à Eskasoni en 2017 et de notre concert à l’aréna de hockey local, Emma Stevens était là comme bénévole.
