The stretch reflex is an involuntary muscle contraction triggered by the rapid stretching of a muscle, acting as a protective mechanism to maintain muscle length and posture.
When muscle spindles detect a quick stretch, they send a signal to the spinal cord, which immediately prompts the muscle to contract, forcing the stretch.
If that’s naturally how our body works. Maybe we should try and tap into that more. You become more energy efficient. If it’s a natural reflex, that doesn’t require a forceful action and thought it will require less energy to move.
This requires you to be snappy, reactive, twitchy. You also have to be relaxed and not in an intense mood or tense w/ in the body.
It works better when you have good mechanics. When you use your tendons how they’re supposed to be used (as spring). You can train this quality by doing plyometrics, Max velocity sprints, wicket runs, isometrics, heavy lifting, explosive movements.
Bad mechanics, weak and unelastic ankles, bad pelvic control, fatigue, too much slow tempo/conditioning work will lead you to detrain this quality.
