👋 Goodbye #MetroCard! This 1996 #NYTMCollection instructional video gave riders detailed directions on how to use MetroCard, including the correct way to swipe and to check the card’s balance. The video played continuously on @MTA MetroCard buses. At the time the video was shown, riders had been dropping tokens into turnstiles for 43 years. One token equaled one ride. Now, with the MetroCard, the experience of fare payment changed, and included the new task of adding to and tracking a card’s value. After 32 years, MetroCard sales will end on December 31, and be fully replaced by OMNY's contactless tap-and-go payment system. The #NYTransitMuseum is sharing archival MetroCard content from our collection each Wednesday through the end of 2025.

📺 This 1989 TV commercial from the #NYTMCollection was one of a series called “The Subway. We're Coming Back, So You Come Back!” The slate of @MTA ads touted the revitalization of the transit system and featured real New Yorkers talking about the improvements they had noticed so far. At the time the commercial aired, upgrades in the #NYCsubway system were undeniable, but public perception lagged behind. Graffiti had been almost completely eradicated. The General Overhaul (GOH) program had been a success, and new programs, like the Scheduled Maintenance System were being introduced to proactively catch mechanical problems. Do you remember seeing these ads?

Via @nytransitmuseum: “Pictured here in this 1915 image from the #NYTMCollection, is the corner of Ditmas Avenue and Gravesend Avenue in #Brooklyn. Gravesend Avenue is now known as McDonald Avenue. It was renamed in 1933 for John R. McDonald (1871-1932), chief clerk at the Brooklyn Surrogate’s Court. Today, this major artery, which runs along the border between the Kensington and Borough Park neighborhoods, is covered by the BMT Culver Line’s elevated structure. Prior to its construction, the South Brooklyn Railway (a BMT subsidiary) ran a trolley route at street level, as seen in the 1915 photograph.”

🎬 This 1973 #NYTMCollection footage comes from the @MTA's “Transit Construction Progress Report." The short film details several local transit improvement projects that were underway in the early 1970s, including the Archer Avenue Lines. The Archer Avenue Lines opened in 1988, with three new stations added to the IND Queens Boulevard Line: Jamaica Center–Parsons/Archer, Sutphin Boulevard–Archer Avenue–JFK, and Jamaica–Van Wyck. Although this project was originally conceived to reach deeper into Queens, the new stations—plus another three added the following year on the 63rd Street Line—were the first crop of new stations in 20 years. The stations of the Archer Avenue Lines are served today by the E, J, and Z trains, with the exception of Jamaica–Van Wyck, served only by the E train. Do you use these stations?

#REPOST @nytransitmuseum with @download_repost_pro - 👋 Goodbye #MetroCard! After 32 years, MetroCard sales will end on December 31. The swipe-to-ride system familiar to all will be fully replaced by OMNY's contactless tap-and-go payment system. This 1997 #NYTMCollection television ad, narrated by @mandypatinkin, introduced MetroCard Gold, which allowed transfers between buses and subways. Before then, MetroCards were blue — not yellow — and transfers were not available. This post begins our MetroCard countdown! Each Wednesday through the end of 2025, we'll be sharing some of our favorite MetroCard content from the Museum's archive. Stay tuned for next week. Will you miss the MetroCard?

Happy #SubwayDay! The NYC Subway turns 119 today! To celebrate, here is the full roll - end to end - of a front route roll sign from the #NYTMCollection, ca. 1949. The roll sign was used in both BMT and IND R-11 cars and then modified for R-32 cars around 1964 to add more route designations. You'll see lots of unfamiliar letters and numbers from a bygone era before everything was standardized across the subway system. Happy birthday, #NYCSubway!
