Mom of three Alex Kornswiet knows all too well the physical and emotional struggles of infertility — from IVF, to surrogacy, to needing help to stay pregnant with her third son. This #NationalInfertilityAwarenessWeek, she reflects on her path to motherhood and the importance of offering grace to others. Here's what she wishes more people understood about infertility.

Six years ago, I did a deep dive on #nationalinfertilityawarenessweek (which is the month during April 21-27). While I know more now, and I might use different language today (like, I wouldn't say my infertility journey is over), I definitely think that the message still holds true today. More of us are struggling with infertility. Infertility is a disease. It impacts men and women equally. Infertility is being politicized. So many ways to build a family are under fire, whether you're going through fertility treatments like IUI or IVF or are considering adoption. I have a bias because I'm a mom who used IVF to build my family-- I realize that. But I hope sharing these facts and sharing a personal story helps people have more empathy for one another regarding a deeply personal decision. After this aired, I got hundreds of responses and well wishes from women and men sharing their stories of struggle and hope. I will never forget that I also received a scathing email from a woman who said I had no right as an adoptee to build my family this way -- just incredible people can be so sure of themselves about someone they've never met. None of us knows what each other goes through behind closed doors. No one realizes the struggles we endure or the challenges we overcome. I hope this speaks to someone who may be enduring and struggling and may want to feel less alone. I am so glad I could share my experience in 2018. I don't know if I would have the same opportunity in today's climate, but I don't regret it and am so thankful I could. #IVF #infertility #infertilityawareness #motherhood #adoption #NIAW @resolveorg

“I have been a bit quiet on my IVF updates the last few days. It's because we have had to cancel this round. Something changed... We are pregnant. I never thought I would ever have a surprise pregnancy. It was something taken away from us a long time ago, because for us, our fertility journey is so monitored and planned. In fact, due to our issues we have avoided natural conception since Bella because of what it means for us due to our genetic carrier status. But here we are surprised. We are so very happy because this was the ultimate goal but it comes with a lot of fear, shock and uncertainty. If the pregnancy continues (it is still very very early) we have a lot of hurdles to overcome before we know if we can keep this baby - miscarriage, chromosome conditions and the 25% chance of spinal muscular atrophy. We are scared at the possibility of having a third termination for medical reasons which is why we have tended to turn to IVF. But here we are. I'm sorry if this triggers anyone. I know in the past hearing about 'surprise' pregnancies hurt me. But it isn't as simple as that for us. As my beautiful friend @heart.of.harper said we are announcing a pregnancy not a baby. We don't know what the future holds. I am scared to announce our pregnancy for fear of the uncertainty but for a long time now I haven't believed in waiting 12 weeks to announce a pregnancy. I know I will need support in the coming months and I am not too big to accept it. I refuse to be a person who hides behind a screen, only sharing the good news. Here we go. One day at a time. Full of fear, happiness and hope.” 🔁 @mylifeof_love

I’ve been going back and forth about sharing my fertility journey on social media for a long time. It’s such a deeply personal experience, and I promised myself I would know when the time felt right — even if our story doesn’t have the ending we’ve been dreaming of… yet. Before anything else, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to Daniel Weaver, the author of a truly beautiful children’s book that he wrote for me — and for anyone walking through a season of darkness. His gift is a reminder that even in the hardest moments, we carry a light within us that no darkness can extinguish — and that holding onto it is an act of quiet, powerful hope. Opening up like this is not easy. But if sharing my journey can bring even one person a little bit of comfort, or help someone feel seen in their own struggle, then it’s more than worth it. Thank you for being here, and for holding space for stories that are still being written #itwontbelong also a huge thank you @trannieanderson for being brave enough to write a song that inspired me to share my journey. 🪽 #WordsOfComfort #thegardenofmaybe #ALLinFertility #InfertilityAwareness #NationalInfertilityAwarenessWeek #NIAW2025 #1in8 #YouAreNotAlone #HealingThroughStories #InfertilitySupport #BreakTheSilence #HopeThroughInfertility #InfertilityJourney #BooksForHealing #TTCCommunity #FertilityWarrior #RESOLVEStrong #IVFSupport #FertilityAwareness #FaithInTheWaiting #HopeIsStrongerThanFear #LightInTheDarkness #HopeInTheHardestMoments #StoriesThatHeal

Welcome to my page 💕 This is my story👇🏼🌈 We started trying to grow our family in 2019 but I had multiple miscarriages and few answers for a long time. 💔 Additionally, adoption was always part of our family plan. So as our journey unfolded, we chose to be open to both (not at all expecting them to actually happen at the same time). And in a story only God could write, we adopted our first son in 2023… and I also gave birth to our second son after (recurrent miscarriages) in 2023. A double portion. Literally never could have planned it this way if I tried. Only God. 🌈🌈 My journey really kind of made me throw the idea of “family planning” out the window and just keep my hands open to what He has. But in the years of waiting and uncertainty, there were days I truly thought I may never get to have children earth side… and I often wrestled through that as a very likely possibility. 💔 So if you’re walking through the valley of loss, praying those PMS symptoms might actually be early pregnancy signs this time, or waiting and wondering if anything will ever change… I see you. And I know the hardest part isn’t the waiting. It’s the uncertainty—not knowing IF all the tests, tears, and prayers will ever amount to anything. And if you need a little encouragement to keep trusting God’s plan, or just a friend who GETS IT… I wrote a book on finding contentment while I was IN that exact place of uncertainty. I also recorded a handful of podcasts throughout my journey. I’d love to share these resources with you for your own journey through waiting & uncertainty. Just comment JOURNEY and I’ll send them your way ❤️👇🏼 xo #nationalinfertilityawarenessweek

in honor of National Infertility Month, I wanted to remember my sweet angels who were before my earthside babies. whenever I see them play, I can’t help but think about the miscarriages I had and how I would give anything to have those sweet babies playing alongside of them. 👼🏼 many of you joined when we got pregnant with Dallas, our firstborn (this was the start of our journey with @fairfaxcryobank). before then, we were using a known donor, with many, many months of no success or successes that shortly turned to months of grieving. this is just a small part of the story. 🌈 we feel so blessed to hold these two bundles of love in our arms and want to help other families grow (two-mom families, those with infertility & single mamas). you can use our code MANDYANDMORGAN25 on fairfaxcryobank.com to have Full Unlimited Access for 90 days completely free! go complete your family.. you deserve it! 🕊️ #infertility #infertilityjourney #ttc #pregnancyafterloss #nationalinfertilityawarenessweek #fyp

“It’s National Infertility Awareness Week 🧡 👉🏽 Did you know that, globally speaking, 1 in 6 couples will struggle to conceive? 👈🏽 Infertility rates are growing + this is something that impacts millions of people around the world. Infertility can seem like an isolating event when you’re going through it yourself, but when you realize the statistic + how it breaks down to be almost 80 MILLION people around the world- it does help to make it a little less isolated. But, unfortunately, there are still some harsh stigmas associated with infertility which means that there are thousands of people out there suffering in silence. Infertility is an intimate + personal journey that some people choose not to share (+ that’s okay!) but I think the most comforting thing can be to help people to know that they’re not alone. Sharing this to your story - even if you’ve never struggled to conceive on your own- can mean the world to someone going through it. You never know who is struggling to conceive + you never know who in your community needs to see this. So let’s talk about it! Let’s break stigmas! Let’s change the narrative + let other people know that they are loved + cared for! Above all else, remember that you’re not alone. 🧡” - @the.warriors.shop Learn more on how you can advocate for #InfertilityAwareness this week at the 🔗 in bio. #TheBump #NationalInfertilityAwarenessWeek 🎥 @the.warriors.shop

When we found out we were pregnant, I was so nervous about where we were going to create a nursery for our son. We live in a small apartment, so I immediately began to strategize how we could turn our office/guest room into an office/guest room/baby room. I shared some ideas on Instagram, only to be greeted by mommy shammers telling me it was bad to have baby in a room with so many electronics. My anxiety worsened. I scratched my vision for a nursery and decided that our son would sleep in our room until he was 12—or until we moved into a house, whichever came first. I’d lay awake at night debating sleep training versus co-sleeping versus Montessori beds to the point of madness. Then, in the blink of an eye, I no longer had the privilege of worrying about Oliver’s nursery. He wouldn’t need one. Ironically, the week we lost him was the same week that his nursery furniture (furniture that I had no where to put) was delivered. It felt like the universe was playing a cruel game of “gotcha.” The following week I had the furniture picked up and sent back to the warehouse by the same delivery guys. I spent weeks wondering if my fixation on *where* Oliver was going to sleep somehow willed my pregnancy away. I convinced myself that maybe my worry made Oliver’s spirit feel like we didn’t have a bed for him, or worse; that we didn’t want him in ours. I know now that this isn’t true. As someone said to me “We all need reminders. Your thoughts, concerns, and inner most secrets did not cause the loss of Oliver. 🤍” In the weeks after his passing, friends and family sent flowers, art, cards and even star registries all inspired by Oliver💫 All of it piled up on this glider—the only piece of furniture the company wasn’t able to take back. If you know me, you know I can’t stand clutter, or piles of things, so today the glider became unpiled. I decided to frame some of the keepsakes that were sent to us, and I put together this little gallery wall above the glider that I could not return. It’s kind of perfect. The grief is changing. Never gone, just different. #lossmom #griefjourney #nationalinfertilityawarenessweek #lossmama #pregnancylosssupport #pregnancyloss
