That was the phrase used in Parliament this week during the discussion about raising NSF allowances.
Great to hear @kennethtiong_sg bring this topic up but I don’t completely agree with the comparisons to Regulars. A closer comparison are NSmen.
The system already recognises something important about National Service: the value of time.
That’s why NS make-up pay exists. When NSmen return for reservist, their allowance plus make-up pay equals their civilian income. The system recognises that time away from work carries an opportunity cost.
The question that follows is simple.
If opportunity cost is recognised during reservist, how should we think about the opportunity cost of full-time NS?
