The legendary rocker announced he is giving the people of Greenland free access to his entire music catalog, a move aimed squarely at pushing back against Trump’s repeated threats to seize the territory. “This is an offer of Peace and Love,” Young wrote on his website, addressing Greenlanders directly. “I hope my music and music films will ease some of the unwarranted stress and threats you are experiencing from our unpopular and hopefully temporary government.” Boom. The 80-year-old Young didn’t stop there. He told the people of Greenland they can enjoy all the music he’s made over the last 62 years, “in its highest quality,” for free — and renew it indefinitely, as long as they remain in Greenland. “All the music I have made during the last 62 years is yours to hear,” he wrote. “LOVE EARTH.” Only residents with a Greenland country code can access the archive — a pointed reminder that this is a gift of solidarity, not a publicity stunt. The move comes as Trump continues to float imperial-style rhetoric about Greenland, treating sovereign nations like Monopoly properties. And it follows Young’s very public feud with Amazon and billionaire Trump benefactor Jeff Bezos, whom Young accused of “selling out America.” Bezos, of course, has showered Trump with money — from funding a $40 million vanity documentary on Melania Trump to a $1 million donation to Trump’s inaugural fund. Young wants nothing to do with any of Bezos’ businesses at this point. “Amazon is owned by Jeff Bezos, a billionaire backer of the president,” Young wrote. “The president’s international policies and his support of ICE make it impossible for me to ignore his actions.” Young urged fans to boycott Amazon, buy music locally, and support independent businesses — the opposite of Trump’s billionaire-first worldview. The group consisted of Canadian musicians Neil Young, Bruce Palmer, and Dewey Martin, alongside Americans Stephen Stills and Richie Furay. Although active for only roughly two years and releasing just three albums, the band’s legacy remains one of the most iconic of the mid to late ’60s counterculture scene. While all members found success following the group’s split, Young and Stills emerged as the band’s breakout stars. The bassist seen with his back toward the camera is in fact not Bruce Palmer, but Dickie Davis. Avila gave Neil a tour in an old blue Jeep and asked how a kid could afford such a place. Neil replied: “Just lucky, Louis. Just real lucky.” 🏡 2. Neil bought the 140‑acre Broken Arrow Ranch in 1970 at age 25 for $350k (about $2.9M in today’s money). He still lives there. 🎤 3. James Taylor played a six‑string banjo on the track and Linda Ronstadt sang harmonies 🌙 4. The recording session started at midnight and ended at dawn. Linda Ronstadt said they recorded “Old Man” and “Heart of Gold” in a late‑night session that ended at sunrise, walking out into a snowstorm. 🥁 5. Neil made the drummer sit on his right hand. Drummer Kenny Buttrey kept wanting to use the hi‑hat. Neil hated it. So he told him: “Play with only your left hand.” Buttrey literally sat on his right hand to stop himself. 📺 6. “Old Man” was recorded the same day as “Heart of Gold” Both songs were cut on February 6, 1971 in Nashville with a group of top studio musicians. 📈 7. It became Neil’s second‑biggest solo hit reaching 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no. 4 in Canada. Only “Heart of Gold” charted higher. 🎬 8. Neil introduced the song with the ranch story on the BBC in 1971. He performed it live on a BBC broadcast just weeks after writing it, telling the same “Just lucky, Louis” story. ❤️ 9. The song is partly about Neil’s divorce. At 25, Neil had just divorced his first wife. The session came just three days after the band wrapped their first European tour, and was taped at midnight, on the same day MTV recorded sets by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men. At the time, Pearl Jam had released only one single from Ten — “Alive.” The set drew almost entirely from Ten, with Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, Jeff Ament, and Dave Abbruzzese performing “Oceans,” “State of Love and Trust,” “Alive,” “Black,” “Jeremy,” “Even Flow,” and “Porch.” They also covered Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” which was cut from the broadcast. The performance aired on May 13, 1992. It wasn’t released officially until Record Store Day Black Friday 2019, and saw a full release on October 23, 2020.

Despite not being born here, Young has always cared deeply about this country and hasn’t been shy about expressing his political opinions when the circumstances warrant. When the Ohio National Guard massacred nine unarmed students at a rally protesting U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War at Kent State University in 1970, Young responded by writing the classic Crosby, Still, Nash, & Young song “Ohio” and rushing to record and release it within weeks of the slaughter it condemned. In the wake of the shooting earlier this week in Minneapolis of an unarmed middle-aged mother by a reprehensible ICE agent, Neil Young is outraged by yet another act of senseless political violence, and he isn’t mincing words. In a blistering editorial posted to his website, Young looks out his window and sees what he calls “the biggest mess I’ve ever witnessed, right here in the United States, this great country I have believed in for decades.” His verdict is unmistakable: “Wake up people! Today The USA is a disaster.” Young lays the blame squarely at Donald Trump’s feet, writing that Trump is “destroying America bit by bit with his staff of wannabes, people with no experience or talent,” and an administration held together by loyalty to “Trump falseness” rather than competence, conscience, or truth. He doesn’t spare congressional Republicans either, calling it “a Congress full of Republicans acting like idiots with no conscience.” “Yes,” Young writes bluntly, “He has divided us.” And then the question that hangs over the entire piece: “How did we elect these creeps who have no spine, no values, no conscience, no way to save the USA.”
