My short answer is YES!!!…⬇️ But you have to know what you’re in for🫶 Starting in the ICU as a new grad can be an incredible experience. You’re exposed to high-acuity patients, you learn to critically think early on, and you build a strong clinical foundation. You see a lot, you learn a lot, and that experience can open so many doors later in your career. That being said, it’s also demanding. The pace is intense, the responsibility is heavy, and the learning curve is steep. It can be overwhelming at times, and you have to be okay with not feeling confident right away and asking for help often. If you’re someone who likes to be challenged, thrives in fast-paced environments, and has a solid support system, ICU can be an amazing place to start. If not, there is absolutely no shame in starting elsewhere. Remember, there’s no “right” path in nursing- just the one that’s right for you. Asking thoughtful questions at the end shows: ✔️ You’re genuinely interested ✔️ You’re thinking long-term ✔️ You care about fit, not just getting any job ✔️ You understand this is a two-way decision Instead of saying “nope,” here are strong questions to consider asking:⤵️ • What are you looking for in an RN candidate to add to your team? • How would you describe your leadership style? • What do nurses like about working here? • What challenges does your team currently face? • What opportunities exist for me to get involved in this department? • What unit projects and initiatives have you been working on? • What is the experience mix on the unit? • What retention strategies have you taken to retain RNs? • What is your process for dealing with issues or staff concerns? • What does success look like for a new RN on this unit in the first 6–12 months? • What qualities have you seen in nurses who thrive here long term? • How do you support professional development and continued growth? • How do you typically provide feedback to staff? • What is your approach to supporting nurses during high-stress situations? • How is orientation structured, and how do you determine readiness to practice independently? • If I were hired, what would you hope I accomplish in my first 90 days? Strong candidates don’t just answer questions well. They ask them well, too. If you want help preparing strategically (not just “winging it”), comment membership and I’ll send you the details! 💕 #nursinginterview #newgradnurse #rnresume #nursecareer #nurseinterview

Nursing is a top tier career choice. So many options and so many schedules. If you’re a bedside nurse, you work 3-4 12s then you’re off for a week or longer. If you leave the bedside and crave a routine, get yourself another job that gives you a better work-life balance. 1. The learning curve is steep Going from being a uni student to suddenly being responsible for your own patients is a huge shift. You might get your first few shifts as supernumerary, but pretty quickly it becomes your own workload and your own decisions. It can feel overwhelming at first, and that’s completely normal. 2. You’ll have little control over your schedule During most new grad programs you’re expected not to take leave, and you usually don’t get much say in your shifts either — the roster is decided for you. If you’re about to start, it helps to plan life around that as much as you can. 3. The pressure to “impress” doesn’t disappear That feeling from nursing school of needing good references doesn’t really go away during new grad. You’re still learning, but you’re also trying to prove yourself so the ward/specialty might want to keep you on once the program finishes. 4. Not everyone will be supportive Some nurses will be incredibly supportive and want to teach you, and others… not so much. Try not to take it personally. Find the ones who are willing to help and learn as much as you can from them. 5. You’ll grow more than you realise It’s a big transition, but that year teaches you a lot. Looking back, you’ll probably realise how much you’ve grown You’ve got this 💪 #nursingaustralia #registerednurses #nurse #newgradnurse #nursingstudents
