Last week at Gabe’s spelling session I made a point of asking him if he wanted his hair cut. The last time he had it cut was in September for Gaby and Skye’s wedding! I happen to love his long hair and hoped he would ask for a trim at most. That was not the response we got. Gabe spelled “BE LIKE DAD.” Gabe’s dad had very short hair! I tried to convince him that he might feel cold having short hair. “STILL WANT SHORT.” This is what Gabe has been wanting for so long, to make his own decisions! One of the first things he ever spelled to me was “NOW IT’S TIME TO ASK ME WHAT I WANT!” Back then we were not able to spell as often as he does now and with little time there is only so much we can discuss. There are days that Gabe and I get to chat for long periods of time. I’m getting to know him on a deeper level each time. He has been talking about his dad whom he never got to meet. Now we can have conversations about him. Gabe wants to know about his teen years at the moment. I contacted @_looksby_lil to make arrangements for this massive haircut. Gabe was so excited for his appointment! I remember being so sad and concerned that Gabe would never be able to communicate his wants and needs with us. Gabe has been spelling for over two years and these years have been the best of my life! I can’t wait to find out how he feels about his new haircut! #autism #haircut #nonspeaking #spelling #nonverbal

There are a lot of misconceptions about individuals diagnosed with nonspeaking or nonverbal autism. Some people think nonspeaking means non hearing or even non understanding. Or they see it as a lack of intelligence. Cooper is very smart. He wants to be heard. He wants to communicate. And he works so hard to do so. #nonverbalautism

After Gabe told us through spelling that he wanted “SHORT HAIR” to “BE LIKE DAD”I knew it was over. The days of us making decisions for him are in the past! Ever since he started spelling he has shared that he wants to be asked about things! One of the first sentences he ever spelled was “TIME TO ASK ME WHAT I WANT!” Although love Gabe’s long hair, I had no choice but to contact Lilly and tell her the plans Gabe has for himself. Gabe practically dragged us out of the house to see her! It took over 30 minutes for her to cut his hair and he sat for it beautifully. It’s unbelievable how far Gabe has come in life. Not only can Gabe tolerate a haircut, he loves them! Maybe one day he will feel the same about the dentist! I can’t wait to find out what he thinks about his short haircut! I do think he accomplished his goal of being more like his dad. I love that he has found a connection to him in this way! #autism #haircut #nonspeaking #spelling #nonverbal @_looksby_lil

He doesn’t use words… but she understands him. He can’t ask, but she knows. He’s 5 years old. She’s only 2. She loves her big brother so much. She loves taking care of him. All by herself. Siblings of autistic children who are non speaking often learn quickly how to listen without words. I’ve said it before, Justin’s birth month always brings a wave of emotions. It hits my heart in a different way every year… and here we are. And just like that, it’s my firstborn’s birth month. My Justin. The boy who has taught me more about love, strength, patience, and faith than I ever imagined. He’s turning 8, and I can’t believe it. I remember when he was 22 months old, I had a conversation with God. I was nine months pregnant (and very emotional), and I begged Him to let my baby speak. Every birthday after that, I told God that if Justin still couldn’t talk by 5, I didn’t think I could handle it. I didn’t think I was strong enough. When 5 came and went, I begged God again… please just help me make it to 6. Maybe 7. Because I truly believed that by then my heart would break. I didn’t think I could keep doing this. But here we are. Year 8. And God has shown me over and over again that I am so much stronger than I ever believed. That love can carry you farther than you ever thought possible. I will never stop wanting to hear my boy’s voice. That ache never really goes away. But more than anything, I just want communication in whatever form it comes. AAC, ASL, spelling... Justin will speak in his own way. And I cannot wait for the day I get to show the world what it looks like to hold on, to keep believing, and to never let your light dull, even on the days that feel heavy and uncertain. Because God may not have answered my prayers in the way I begged Him to… but He has been answering them in other ways. He’s been writing a story bigger than my fears, and one day that story will shine brighter than every hard moment we’ve walked through. I love you Justin, my living angel. 💙 #autism #autismawarness #nonspeaking #god #faith

Autism regression can be one of the most confusing and heartbreaking experiences for families, especially when it happens in toddlerhood or early childhood. Autism regression refers to a noticeable loss of previously acquired skills. This most often includes spoken words, gestures, eye contact, social engagement, play skills, or self-help abilities. A child may have been saying words, waving, responding to their name, or engaging socially— and then those skills fade or disappear. Regression most commonly occurs between 15 and 30 months, though it can happen earlier or later. Some children develop typically for their first year or two and then regress suddenly, while others experience a gradual regression over months that can be harder to spot. Regression can also happen again later in childhood during periods of stress, illness, puberty, or major transitions. What it can look like in toddlers and children: • Loss of spoken language or fewer words • Stopping gestures like pointing, waving, or clapping • Reduced eye contact or social interaction • Increased repetitive behaviors or sensory sensitivities • Withdrawal from play or peers • Changes in sleep, eating, or emotional regulation • Increased meltdowns or frustration (often from losing communication) For many children, the loss of communication skills is the most distressing aspect-both for the child and for parents-because the child still has thoughts and needs, but fewer ways to express them. The exact cause isn’t fully understood. Current research suggests regression is related to differences in brain development and neural connectivity. It is not caused by parenting, trauma, or vaccines. Sometimes regression follows illnesses, seizures, or periods of intense developmental change, but often there’s no single clear trigger. #autism #autistic #autismacceptance #autismawareness #nonspeaking

Kids who don’t use mouth words are not nonverbal, they are nonspeaking. Besides the fact that the term “nonverbal” often has a negative connotation and history, it’s also just not the most accurate term. Nonverbal = lack of words. Nonspeakers HAVE words. But they lack the motor skills to turn those words / language (thoughts) into speech. Speech is separate from language! Language is cognitive. Speech is motor. #nonspeaking #nonverbalautism #nonverbal

People living with disabilities often get left out of social situations and conversations. Especially if they are mostly non speaking.🥲♥️ Most of the time it’s simply a lack of understanding of disabilities or the fear of saying/doing something wrong that might offend. Gratefully we get to change that mindset every day by constantly showing up in our community and educating others in kindness & love. When we all coexist, we learn from each other in beautiful ways. We are so thankful for our community who are patient with us & help Odin feel included & loved. Inclusion Matters! Love Always Wins!♥️🤟 #autismacceptance #disabilitypride #sharejoy #inclusion #lovewins
