Despite the federal government’s own admission that wind energy offers “cost-competitive, emission-free and locally produced electricity across the country,” President Donald Trump said this week that “we’re not allowing any windmills to go up.” During his Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the president praised the coal and nuclear power industries and said no more wind turbines will be built. His administration has already revoked permits for or halted construction on wind power projects that had previously received federal approval. “Unless there's a legal situation where somebody committed to it a long time ago, we don't allow windmills,” Trump said. He said wind turbines were “ugly” and claimed that they “don’t work, they kill your birds, they’re bad for the environment and, if you look at them from a house, your house is worth less than 50%.” The U.S. Department of Energy’s website, as of Wednesday, notes that wind energy “doesn't emit pollution, resulting in less pollution going into the air, oceans and environment.” A 2024 study published in the journal PNAS found “robust evidence of a 1% drop of home values within a wind turbine’s viewshed.” Trump also criticized the use of solar panels. “You see these big ugly patches of black plastic that comes from China,” he said. “I like solar in some ways. But for firing up your big plants, it doesn't work. … The farmers are saying, you know, they're building these massive blotches in the middle of the fields all over the country.” Earlier this month, the Department of Agriculture announced it would no longer fund solar farms on “productive farmland” or permit the use of foreign-made solar panels in USDA projects. “Whether we like it or not, fossil fuel is the thing that works, and then you can add nuclear with it and other things,” Trump said. “But fossil fuel is what works if we're going to fire up those big monster factories.”
