Prime numbers are numbers that have no factors other than one and themselves. The first 10 prime numbers are 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19,23,29... Since prime numbers must have no factors other than one and themselves, prime numbers greater than two cannot be even, as if a prime number greater than two was even, it would have a factor of 2 in it, making it not a prime number. By a similar argument, prime numbers greater than 3 are not divisible by 3. Using these two rules together, prime numbers greater than 3 cannot be of the form 6k, 6k+2, 6k+3 or 6k+4. So the only forms that prime numbers greater than 3 can be are the forms 6k+1 and 6k+5. In modular arithmetic, this would be referred to as a prime p which is greater than 3 is congruent to 1(mod 6) or congruent to 5(mod 6). Consider squaring this value: if p = 6k+1, p²= 6²k² + 2*6k + 1 = 36k² + 12k +1 = 24k² + 12k² + 12k +1 = 24k² + 12(k² + k) + 1 Consider what k² + k would be, if k was odd, k² is odd, so k² + k is even. if k was even, k² is even, so k² + k is even. So k² + k has a factor of two. This means 12(k²+k) is a multiple of 24. 24k² is a multiple of 24. So if you just get rid of the one at the end we get a multiple of 24. If we consider the only other form a prime number can have, if p = 6k + 5, p² = 6²k² + 2*6*5k + 5² = 36k² + 60k + 25 = 24k² + 12k² + 12k + 48k + 24 +1 = 24k² + 12(k²+k) + 48k + 24 +1 As we found earlier, 12(k²+k) is a multiple of 24. The rest of the terms except for 1 are multiples of 24. So clearly if we remove the one in this case aswell, we will get a multiple of 24. Therefore, in general, if we take a random prime number greater than 3, square it and take away one, we will be left with a multiple of 24.
