COWeek 1 skill acquisition & setting standards:
Current early offseason training layout:
Day 1 Mon: UB1 (upper body emphasis)
Day 2 Tue: LB1 (lower body emphasis)
Day 3 Thur: UB2 (upper emphasis)
Day 4 Fri: LB2 (lower emphasis)
*Wed: Voluntary extra work or OFF*
We train full body every day, we jump every day, we play 🏐 every day, but the EMPHASIS changes each day.
Is this layout the best way or only way you should train? Absolutely not.
Shown are clips from Day 3 & 4 of our first week of offseason training.
Day 3:
-Plate Squat at a cadenced tempo.
(Future post coming focusing solely on coaching cadence).
-Since this is an upper emphasis day we are minimally loading the lower body, but still being productive learning/rehearsing the squat pattern that we plan to load at higher intensities.
Day 4:
-Barbell Back Squat at the same cadenced tempo as the plate squats we did the day before.
-Lower body emphasis day means we are programming higher intensity & volume of lower body work. This includes sprints/COD, jumps, & resistance training.
Establishing execution standards:
Some of these athletes have never trained with me before. So:
-I’m learning how they move.
-They learn how I want them to execute.
Week 1 focus:
1) Range of motion (ROM)
2) Breathing
Everything you do (& think) is wiring your nervous system. This can be positive or negative.
Just a few things I’m learning/making notes of:
-How each individual moves (EVERY practice/game/S&C session is a movement ASSESSMENT).
-How does our new team interact with each other?
-How are the newcomers adjusting to their new environment?
-Which athletes are helping coach up their teammates?
-Who’s stepping up as leaders?
-Who’s encouraging/celebrating others?
-Who half asses what they do if I’m not standing near them?
-What do I need to do better? Did the session flow well based on how I set up the weight room & my exercise pairings?
-How is our discipline when it comes to following instructions, cadence, etc?
