WHThe anglerfish is famous for its lure. But the lure isn't even the most unsettling thing about it.
The female carries males permanently fused into her skin. Not attached — absorbed. Their blood supplies merge with hers. Their organs dissolve. They lose their eyes. They survive only as a biological function she requires.
She can carry several at once. Each one permanent. Each one still alive in the most minimal sense of the word.
And the light she hunts with? That belongs to bacteria living inside the lure. Not her own. Another organism she cannot survive without.
The deep ocean is the least understood place on Earth. The anglerfish is one of the few things we've actually managed to study. Which raises the question of what else is down there that we haven't.
