ROThis is a Giant Oceanic Manta Ray, the largest ray in the world, growing up to 29 feet (8.8 meters) across. But aside from its size, do you know how to tell it apart from the closely related reef manta ray?
The easiest clue is in its dorsal markings—two mirror-image, right-angled white triangles that form a distinct ‘T’ shape against its black back, as you can clearly see in the last shot, looking down on the manta’s wings.
After primarily seeing Reef Manta Rays throughout my time in Raja Ampat, coming across this massive Oceanic Manta Ray was a thrill. Have you ever swam alongside these peaceful giants?
