This type of gear almost always beats normal gears for 3d-printing, here's why (and how to make them)! Herringbone gears is a type of gear where each tooth has the shape of an arrow. This has two main advantages over normal spur gears: 1. The transmission is more smooth. 2. They have a self aligning effect, the teeth lock into each other and make the gears align as shown in the video. The second benefit is extremely useful for 3d prints! But why? It's because 3d-prints have rough surfaces and not so fine tolerances. This makes aligning the gears one of the biggest challenges, unlike metal gears where you can just put finer tolerances and don't have to worry about alignment. So why are not all gears herringbone gears? The main reason is that they are harder to manufacture. But for 3d-printing this is not the case, so there are almost no reasons to choose a normal spur gear over a herringbone gear. Here is how to make them: Autodesk fusion: Download the Helical Gears + extension (can be found by searching in a web browser). Install it. A new button for helical gears will appear in the "create" menu. When using the extension, there is a checkbox that you can select called "herringbone gear". Solidworks: Solidworks unfortunately doesn't really have a good easy way to make this (at least not that i could find). The best way i found is to make the gear using stlgears.com, then import it to solidworks (but as the gear will be an STL file it will be somewhat hard to edit). You can also draw the actual gear geometry from scratch and sweep then mirror it, but that is very time consuming. Let me know in comments if you know a better way! Onshape: Use the "Spur gear" function and select "helical" to make a helical gear. You can then mirror this gear to make a herringbone gear. #cad #3dprinting #fusion360 #solidworks #onshape
