Why Swimming Beats 10,000 Steps Walking 10,000 steps takes 90 minutes and burns about 300 calories. 30 minutes of swimming burns 200-700 calories while activating 60+ muscles instead of 20. Water is 800x denser than air, so every stroke is resistance training with zero joint impact. Swimming grows new brain cells, lowers anxiety, improves sleep, and cuts your risk of early death by 50% compared to walkers. Walking is good. Swimming is a completely different category. Of course you can do both, but many people only have less than 1 hour to do some kind of exercise. You’re not saving oxygen… you’re building CO₂. CO₂ builds up = panic, rush & breathlessness. ❌ 2. Breathing too late (4–6 strokes). You don’t delay breathing on land - don’t force it in water. Unnatural → oxygen debt → you exhaust. ❌ 3. Exhaling only through Nose. Too slow for long distances. You'll still be exhaling when you turn to inhale, & it breaks your rhythm. 👉These work for short sprints, but fails in long-distance swimming. Let's fix it: ✅ No breath-holding (exhale underwater, inhale above water) ✅ Breathe more often (every 2 strokes, max 3) ✅ Use mouth/both to exhale (faster, controlled) — Ready for your breakthrough? Open water swimming is not just “pool swimming in a bigger pool”. Most beginners learn this the hard way… including us. Here are 3 mistakes that can make open water feel 10x harder (and scarier) than it needs to be: 1. Going too hard → getting exhausted → panicking This is the biggest one. In a pool, you can push hard because you always have a wall. In the ocean, you don’t. If you gas out in deep water, your heart rate spikes, breathing gets messy, and panic kicks in. That’s a dangerous loop. Instead, think of open water swimming like a long, steady effort. Stay in a comfortable pace. You should feel like you can keep going. Calm > fast. Always. 1. Using the wrong goggles This sounds small, but it makes a huge difference. Most open water swims happen under harsh sunlight. With regular goggles, the glare can hit your eyes so hard that you’ll struggle to even keep them open. And if you can’t see, you can’t navigate. Use tinted / reflective goggles for day swims. It makes everything clearer, calmer, and way more manageable. 1. Not practicing sighting In a pool, you just follow the lane. In open water, there are no lanes. If you don’t sight, you’ll slowly drift off course without even realizing it. We’ve had swims where we ended up way off track because of this. The fix is simple: Learn crocodile sighting. Every few strokes, lift your eyes forward (not just sideways breathing) and check your direction. It feels awkward at first. But it’s a non-negotiable skill. None of this is obvious when you’re starting out. And honestly, most of us learn it after making these mistakes. So if you’re getting into open water swimming, save this. You’ll need it. We’re currently training to swim from Sri Lanka to India 🌊 And sharing everything we wish we knew when we started.
