APEight years ago this week, the team at @aphospital intubated my daughter, Lorelei.
We were in Orlando for vacation and Lorelei got the flu, before we even made it to Disney. We spent 3.5 weeks in the APH PICU but Lorelei survived and we were blessed with several more years with her.
Lorelei passed in 2021, but would be 10 years old next month. And since we are heading to Disney for Benji — we are taking 10 @apricityhopeproject PICU bags to Arnold Palmer for medically complex families who are stuck in the PICU like we were.
These bags are loaded for caregivers. Nothing for kids. AHP cares for the moms and dads who are navigating lives they never expected to be living because we believe that in order to truly care for the kids, we must care for the parents too. 💖

QUMeet Haven!🌟 This brave 11-month-old was born with Schaaf-Yang Syndrome, a rare neurodevelopmental disorder affecting just 250 people worldwide. Haven has spent 304 days in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and recently received a tracheostomy to help her breathe.
After extensive training, her family is ready to care for her at home, supported by the Home Ventilation Program. Haven will soon celebrate her first birthday on February 25th with her two older sisters, Aviya-Lee and Alaya. 🎉

MUI saw a couple with a newborn baby today. It made me smile and I wondered what we were doing on this day nine years ago when the girls were finally home from hospital. The truth is there was nothing very ordinary about this time, but for us this was a new start at home after the girls 11 weeks in hospital. I checked my camera roll and this was it - Our first walk out as a family of six with Felix wanting to push his triplet sisters in the Bus-Chair. I can remember the joy and pride I felt. My goodness I was tired with three babies on a 3 hourly feed cycle, and expressing in between, but I’d brought my babies home from NICU. Life was filled with hope and my nervous system was settling after all that had already happened. I’m glad I didn’t know then what would happen 3 days later.
But it’s such an important message for me to share. All of the babies became ill. David had stayed home from work which meant I could spend longer with Amelie whilst he fed Etta. I was pleased she had taken more of her feed thinking she must be getting better, and then the unthinkable happened. I felt her go still. She’d stopped breathing. Because she was in my arms we were able to act quickly. She stopped breathing again in the ambulance. She was transferred to intensive care on life support. And I didn’t know how I’d ever sleep again because how could I not watch her 24/7. I feel so protective of families with vulnerable babies and others with suppressed immunity. Our germs are too big for them, so please do not ask to visit if you have a cold.
I remember asking the doctor in the ambulance as we were transferred to the nearest available PICU, “what would have happened if she wasn’t in my arms”. She took my hand and said “she was in your arms and that’s all you need to think about”. Amelie was meant to be here. We were so careful, but please do be so strict about who visits and please don’t worry about offending adults when it comes to the health of your little ones 🩷
