Consistency is about making progress over time, not about being perfect every day. For example, a 2019 study on mindfulness (Galla et al., 2019) found that people who meditated a few times a week, even if they missed some days, experienced bigger reductions in stress and anxiety over six months compared to those who tried to meditate every single day but gave up after a few weeks. The most important factor for success wasn’t doing it perfectly every day, but sticking with it over time. Brain scans back this up. MRI studies on mindfulness (Tang et al., 2015) show that practicing meditation (even inconsistently) creates long-term changes in the brain that help people manage stress better. This challenges the idea that missing a session ruins progress. In reality, even small, repeated efforts lead to real improvements over time. The same pattern applies to exercise. A 2021 study on fitness habits (Kaushal et al., 2021) followed 500 people trying to build a workout routine. The study found that: • Those who exercised 3–4 times a week with flexible effort were able to stick with their routine for over a year • Those who tried to work out at full intensity every single day were 80% more likely to quit within three months, usually because they felt like they had “fallen off track” • Missing a workout didn’t affect their long-term fitness results, but beating themselves up over missed workouts made them more likely to quit altogether These studies show that progress adds up over time, even if some days are easier than others. So if you have a goal and you’ve been feeling discouraged about it, focus on showing up in whatever way you can, instead of trying to do it perfectly every time.
