Numb. Shut down. But trauma doesn’t disappear just because you pretend it’s not there. It goes quiet… Until it doesn’t. That’s where EMDR comes in. Short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing... EMDR helps your brain safely reprocess the pain and finally let it go. 3 self soothing somatic holds: Use these when you're feeling sad, anxious, lonely, scared or for PTSD recovery. Any time you want to feel more safe in your body. 1. Self hug! 🤗 This releases oxytocin and activates the parasympathetic nervous system (rest & digest mode) 2. Hand on heart 💓 also calms the nervous system and is a simple way to practice self compassion. It says "I see you and I'm here for you". 3. 3 part breathing: place one hand on your belly and one on your chest. Take a deep breath expanding the belly (1) then the lungs (2) then slowly exhale (3) emptying from the belly first. Takes us to a ventral vagal (relaxed and present) state. Why doesn’t everyone with trauma have PTSD? Everyone experiences traumatic events at some point in life. So why are only some affected with long-term consequences? The greatest correlation is disgust during a traumatic event. That visceral feeling of horror creates a lot of sensations in the body that can lead to freezing—which in turn leads to recurrence of these sensations, as they’re never fully processed. Somatic therapy allows you to process the sensations of the event (or events) in order to regain a sense of safety in your body. What do you wish you understood about trauma and PTSD recovery?
