Because purple and yellow are complementary colors (opposites on the color wheel), laying down a soft purple underpainting creates deep, natural shadows when you glaze your yellow over the top. This rule applies everywhere! Notice how I used a red base for the green leaves? Red is the complement to green, creating the perfect dark, earthy shadow. Because Cyan is “lighter” than Red but still warm, it lifts the value while keeping the saturation incredibly “high”. This creates a glowing, fiery light rather than a “pastel” brown. This is essential for painting fire, sunsets, or the glowing transparency of “flower” petals where you need the color to feel hot, not browned out. #mixingcolors #paintingtips
