PAHow hard is it to learn how to sling?
Not hard. Slinging is simply throwing with a lever. However, people often overcomplicate it because they are intimidated.
This is what typically happens:
Excited to try slinging, they start with a rock. But, in the back of their mind they are also concerned that they might hit themselves with the rock-loaded pouch. As a result, they adopt wide loopy swings, attempting to maximize the distance between themselves and the sling while still trying to throw. It’s like trying to dance with someone without ever touching them: awkward and out of sync.
Learning to sling quickly and with control requires that you learn to integrate the sling into natural throwing mechanics—either a sidearm or an overhand throw.
This means not picking up a stone or putting anything else into the pouch until the motion makes sense. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but it should feel natural, like throwing by hand. It can be understood in 30 minutes or less.

People overwhelmingly believe that slings get their power by twirling it around and around, faster and faster, then letting go at the right moment.
With that perception it’s no wonder that slinging isn’t more common. That approach is out of control, impossible to aim, and very underpowered.
Also, some slinging “techniques” are almost useless. These also occur through a basic misunderstanding of the sling. I often see people use it as if the sling is the source of the throwing, like a bow shooting an arrow. This usually leads to underutilization of the sling.
Throw with your sling, not sling with your sling.
