And so you shrink. You overthink. You hide. Not because you’re broken. But because you learned to protect yourself from the fallout. Here’s what this fear can look like today: • You overanalyze how others might perceive you • You feel exposed after sharing—even when you want to be seen • You dim your light or silence your truth to avoid conflict • You fear success or attention, even when you’re ready for more • You stay small because somewhere inside, being seen still feels dangerous But here’s the truth: Being seen didn’t hurt you. It just isn’t always enough. When you’re dissociated, “feel your feet” or “notice the chair” might touch the surface without really reaching you. Because dissociation often comes with stillness, the body may need something more active to register safety. That could be the tiniest movement.
A shift in temperature.
Or a shared sound anchor that reminds you you’re not alone in this moment. Dissociation isn’t failure. It’s a protective part doing its job. Sharing it again because I still get emails from people saying how much doing this practice regularly has helped them. Why does this work? So many feelings are just waiting to be seen, felt and included. And yet so often we distract, suppress, and run away from them. Also many of us haven’t been taught better tools. The moment you give it your curious attention allow it to belong without agenda, something changes. “What we resist persists,” (Carl Jung) Inclusion and acceptance is what creates change and this is a mini version of it.
