I say lean in - be honest but don’t be afraid to share your achievements and accomplishments. Took on workload of three due to high turnover? Include it. Performance review season is already not a crowd favorite. Throw in an a retaliatory manager that uses this opportunity as a chance to unleash on an employee and it’s a real recipe for disaster. This manager has been waiting all year to use this time to catch you off guard and gaslight you. For them it is less about the actual performance goals and more about retaliating against you. Maybe they just don’t like you. Maybe they didn’t like something you said. Maybe they are just never happy. Either way they try to make you pay for it during the performance review. RUN from any manager that behaves this way and any company that supports this type of behavior. Look familiar? How did you handle the situation? I fought it hard and then I just gave up and left.
