This easy piano lesson exercise focuses on playing steadily with a metronome. Learning to use a metronome as a beginner piano player is so important to building a strong foundation and having success at the piano as playing piano is a rhythmic activity which requires learning how to keep a steady count while playing. A website that has a giant database of the chords to EVERY popular song written in the last 100 years...
And best of all. It's all free.
And because of this one website, paired with a simple cheat sheet (more on that later...), you can literally learn 165 songs in 45 minutes (stay with me here!).
If you don't believe me yet...
“Umm... How Does This Work Exactly?”
Back in the day (pre-internet), sheet music was really the ONLY way you could learn a lot of songs out there. And because of that, teachers (rightly) preached how important it was to learn to read music.
But then along comes the internet and SHAKES EVERYTHING UP… 🔥
And with this new website (you'll see what website I'm talking about in a sec) you can quickly and easily look up the chords to any song out there (there's generally 4 or 5 per song that repeat over and over).
Then you use a simple Chord Shapes Cheat Sheet to match the shape of the chord to the piano. It's super easy. Kinda like that toy little kids have where they match the square block to the square hole, the circle to the circle, and the star to the star...
Not much harder than that.
And BOOM! You can (almost instantly) play the song.
But it gets even better...
Because once you've learned the chords to one song... there are typically a whole boatload of "Copycat Songs" that use the exact same Chords Shapes. And so with a little bit of simple tweaking...
You can multiply that ONE song out to HUNDREDS of songs *almost* instantly, with very little practice on your part. We call this the "Song Multiplier Formula."

KEWhy this works on multiple levels👇
One of the main things this exercise trains you in is hand indepedence. Not only do the scales move in contrary motion, but they are staggered so the notes are not in unison. This adds a layer of complexity in playing, and is harder than it appears.
The next thing is, moving chromatically up a note to form the next scale requires you to know your keys/scales really well. Coupled with the challenge of hand independence, it makes the exercise even more complex.
Always go slow, use the regular pentascale fingering, and play with intention feeling the confluence of notes in this pattern. And add some shaping to your exercise too!
