PIY’all have been asking a lot about canvas size lately so I thought this would be a good video for #throwbackthursday !
I usually work at 250x500px in procreate, the main reason I chose this canvas size is that I think the pixel density looks good on phone screens.
As you can see in this video - I usually don’t fill the whole canvas, I zoom way in and my actual sprites are much smaller.
Every pixel artist has to think about how “big” or what “resolution” their sprites will be. I like to reference vintage sprites sometimes and every iteration of street fighter uses a different number of pixels for chun-li’s buns.
Back in 2019 I drew sprites at a smaller resolution—the smaller sprites are faster to draw but ultimately I sized up because I wanted to include more detail on small items.
Bigger sprites are more detailed and more time consuming to make so it’s a good idea to experiment and decide what makes sense for your project!
Some of y’all say my art reminds you of unpacking (totally welcome comparison as we both use isometric pixel art), but if you do notice a difference it’s because unpacking’s art is at a much higher resolution (meaning more pixels and more detail) than mine. I saw in a youtube video that the first item they drew for unpacking was a mug — i think starting with a mug is a great way to figure out what resolution feels right for your pixel art project. It’s surprisingly difficult to get a mug to ‘read’ well at low resolutions. I couldn’t get it ti work in the 2019 style.
