A_Why are washer & dryers usually the furthest point from where clothes are actually stored?
We questioned this early in our design and realised:
• most laundry starts and ends in bedrooms
• carrying baskets through the house is extra effort
• day-to-day practicality matters more than tradition
Yes — we’ll sometimes carry clothes through the kitchen to the washing line.
But most drying will happen in a drying cupboard or dryer, so it made sense to design around how we actually live.
Self-build lesson:
Don’t design for “the way it’s always been done.”
Design for the version of life you’ll live every day.

PHMost of us will at some point have to make a hard choice. It might be a relationship, a career, or moving house, but a hard choice is when there is no obvious answer about how to go on. But the philosopher Ruth Chang offers us a piece of advice to help. Chang argues that a hard choice is when all of the ‘practical reasons’ have run out.
For example, if you’re deliberating what to do, you draw up a list of all of the pros and the cons of option A and option B. For example, imagine Adam is debating what to do about his career. Should he choose one which is intellectually exciting, or one which is financially secure? And so he calculates how stimulated he’ll be in job A, and he calculates how much money he’ll get in job B.
It’s hard to compare stimulation with money, and so the practical reasons have run out. It is a hard choice. But Chang argues that we can create an ‘existential reason’ by choosing one side over the other. When we are torn by a hard choice, we have to commit to a future version of ourselves. In the case of Adam, he has to decide whether he wants to use his mind every day, or whether he wants a nice house and a nice car.
When we commit to a relationship, a career, or whatever, we commit to a version of ourselves. Chang argues that when we are presented with a hard choice, we should reframe it as two questions: ‘What will this choice make of me?’ And, ‘is that somebody I want to become?’

GEIn a house full of boys, roughhousing is inevitable.
But we have one non-negotiable rule that changed the entire dynamic of our home:
👉If you hurt your brother, you help your brother.
In this house, "sorry" isn't the finish line—it’s the starting point.
When things go too far, or even accident, the one who caused the bump or the bruise doesn't just walk away or get sent to time-out.
They will be the one who grabs the ice pack or bandaid and sit with his brother until he's okay.
◇Why does this work?
It teaches Impact over Intent: It doesn’t matter if it was an "accident." The hurt still exists, and they are responsible for the repair.
It builds understanding: It forces them to stop their own adrenaline and look at the face of the person they hurt. It turns a "villain" back into a brother.
It prepares them for the real world: I’m not just raising boys who can apologize to get out of trouble. I’m raising men who take ownership of the energy they bring into a room and the impact they have on the people they love.
We aren't just raising brothers; we’re raising future husbands, fathers, and friends. And in the real world, "sorry" doesn't fix the hole in the wall—effort does.
And yes, this can apply to girls as well.
And yes, this is the rule if they hurt other kids too.
