RAThe #SeanBell case changed me in a way I can’t describe in my almost three decades with @real_sharpton & @nationalactionnetwork. How could an unarmed man be shot at 50 times on the day he was supposed to marry his high school sweetheart Nicole or Coli as we all called her.
It happened on Thanksgiving weekend 2006 when NYPD cops fired 50 shots, killing Sean Bell and wounding Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield. Rev. Sharpton called me after getting a call from his friend Rev. Timothy Wright—Sean’s cousin, a gospel legend, and part of the spiritual network that rang the alarm. The NAN staff mobilized swiftly Tamika, Foy, Deymen, Toon and other soldiers.
We held a press conference that first day and many days after demanding justice through marches, civil disobedience and non-violent protests. Coli became my little sister through every legal battle and every single inflection point.
I worked beside Rev. shaping the media narrative, doing daily rapid response, building a cadence of action to mobilize the community, and keeping Sean Bell’s name in the national conversation. We fought federally for an investigation, locally for reform, and publicly through media activism. We were a vessel for the family when tears were shed and strategies were formed.
The officers were ultimately acquitted, deepening the outrage and fueling calls for police reform across NYC and the nation. Through it all, Sean’s parents, his sister, Coli, Joey all became NAN family—bound not just by grief, but by purpose. ✊🏾
Justice is the work we do long after the cameras leave. And as the person who often got the cameras there, this case forever changed my life.
Joey survived 11 bullets, Trent survived 3, and the trauma lives on—but so does our resolve.

HOPhilonise Floyd was back at his childhood home in Houston on Sunday, five years after the death of his brother George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis.
He reminded residents and neighbors of Cuney Homes, the historic public housing complex in Third Ward, that the movement for justice, police reform and an end to racism that grew to global proportions after his brother's death would not end.
"We're fighting for a purpose," Philonise Floyd said at the community center at the complex where he and his siblings grew up. "We're going to be standing here with these people because we have a purpose. We're not going anywhere."
After Philonise spoke, his sister LaTonya sang "Family Reunion," a song by the O'Jays about the importance of coming together to celebrate and connect with one another.

FONYC comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested by ICE in immigration court Tuesday, according to his spokesperson.
Brad Lander, 55, is the current NYC comptroller and a progressive who advocates for police reform, affordable housing, and better management of the migrant crisis.
Apparently, Lander has been accompanying immigrants exiting immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza and Lower Manhattan to help shield them from possible detention by ICE.

COCongratulations to Captain Earl Marsh on his retirement after serving the @ColumbiaPDSC & @wearecolumbia for 33 years. Captain Marsh joined #ColumbiaPDSC in 1991 as a Police Cadet. He rose through the ranks and worked as an undercover narcotics officer, SWAT commander and K-9 handler. His most recent assignment was over seeing the Special Operations Bureau. In this role, Captain Marsh was instrumental in developing a comprehensive, situational awareness and emergency management platform for CPD ‘s day-to-day operations. Captain Marsh also played a key role in the implementation of the $8.5 million citywide Motorola surveillance camera program and the establishment of the Real Time Crime Center. Captain Marsh, is a certified instructor in several areas, including active shooter, firearm, safety, immediate action response, weapons of mass destruction, awareness, dignitary protection, defense technology/immediate action team response, and crisis negotiations. During Marsh’s retirement celebration, Chief Holbrook said, “Captain Marsh has distinguished himself as one of the most respected and accomplished police officers at the Columbia police department. His steady and trusted leadership has helped guide our agency through leadership changes, organizational transformation, police reform, national accreditation and some of the most turbulent times, including the two days of civil and rest in May 2020. Marsh leaves a legacy of one who has remained true to his duty, honor, and mission of the Columbia Police Department.” Captain Marsh says, “This is not goodbye; it’s see ya later.”
