One of goals in my therapy practice is making DBT skills more accessible. Traditional DBT programs are highly effective but often run 12 to 24 weeks and can be a big time and financial commitment for many clients. Before offering a six-week DBT skills group, I reviewed the research. Studies show that brief DBT skills training can improve emotional distress, coping skills, and overall functioning even when delivered outside a full DBT program. Very brief DBT interventions, including single sessions, can reduce negative emotions and increase confidence in managing distress. Other trials show that DBT skills training alone can improve emotion regulation and reduce self-harm even when clients continue their usual therapy. Clients don’t necessarily need a full DBT program to benefit from learning the skills. This group is designed as a practical skills training add-on for clients already in therapy or for those who want a refresher. The next cycle runs for six weeks starting April 21 at 6pm EST and is available to clients in Ontario and Nova Scotia. We cover all four DBT skills modules: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Clients can pre-register through my website. Self validation is one of the most misunderstood DBT skills. It does not mean agreeing with every thought. It does not mean excusing behavior. It does not mean staying stuck. Self validation means acknowledging that your internal experience makes sense in context. Context leads to increased compassion, for ourselves and others. It sounds like: Of course I feel hurt. That mattered to me. It makes sense that I am anxious. This is new. Anyone with my history might react this way. When we skip validation, we add a second layer of suffering. First the emotion. Then the judgment about the emotion. I should not feel this way. I am too sensitive. What is wrong with me? That second layer is what keeps people stuck. Validation lowers shame. Shame lowers defensiveness. And when defensiveness drops, change becomes possible. In DBT, we validate first so we can move forward effectively. Notice the order. Understanding before correction.
