In a world when anyone can say or publish anything online - even journals can be pay-to-publish - it’s really hard to figure out whether a study is quality without training in that field. There is a hierarchy of evidence that can help, though. Case studies and expert opinions are weak because these typically rely on limited data, often a single person. After that: in vitro (Petri dish) and animal studies. These are useful to start to answer questions, but they CANNOT be used to generalize to people. Many facets of humans are vastly different from cells on a piece of plastic or other animal species. Unfortunately, too often, people mischaracterize non-human studies and make claims about humans. Randomized controlled trials are considered a gold standard for evaluating medical questions; they often include blinding so that participants and researchers don’t know who has had what exposure, to limit potential skewing of data. Systematic reviews & meta-analyses can be powerful: these analyze & combine results from multiple similar studies. However: if the studies used in these are garbage, so are the results of these analyses. Study design, for all of these types of studies, also matters. Is it relevant to the question being asked? If you’re selectively searching for a single study that supports your opinion, that’s not an appropriate way to review the data on a topic. That’s called cherry picking and is really common in the influencer world. There are lots of bad studies out there, and you can pretty much find anything to support a point of view: that’s why we consider the body of evidence on a topic, not just one paper. How to Sell Health Pseudoscience: A Crash Course in Con Artistry Ever wondered how snake oil salesmen manage to convince customers that crystals can cure cancer or that drinking urine will make you immortal? This video is a masterclass in deception. Watch as a con artist (me!) reveals the secret techniques to an apprentice-in-training (also me!). By the end, you’ll be able to spot a fake health guru from a mile away and save your wallet (and your health) in the process. With a third of the world’s cattle and a population divided between a lactose tolerant north and west and a largely lactose intolerant south and east, milk related misinformation is all over. Further, a rich tradition of dairy that goes back thousands of years was yanked into the modern world thanks to Dr Varghese Kurian’s White Revolution, which took a nutritious but highly perishable product in a country with huge amounts of poverty & malnutrition and managed to make safe milk near universally available to anyone, even those living in cities, even during the pre-home-fridge era. This is a jawdropping achievement that should get as much accolade as UPI or any other digital infrastructure that we are all proud of. But thanks to social media, the proud defenders of ancient tradition have managed to somehow turn this stellar achievement into a quagmire of pseudoscience and misinformation. In this video, with the help of dairy technology @banjaranfoodie’s research, I debunk some of the most common milk myths that we see on social media. If you have heard other myths, leave a comment and we will address those as well! #food #dairy #indianfood #milk #pseudoscience #mythbusters #foodscience #reelkarofeelkarto #reels #reelsofinstagram

Pseudoscience: beliefs, practices, or claims that are presented as scientific but lack the empirical evidence, reproducibility, and rigor of credible scientific research. Pseudoscience often uses anecdotal evidence or emotional appeals and personal testimonials in contrast to robust clinical data. In addition, while science adjusts as we accrue more data over time, pseudoscience ignores contradictory data and refuses to change in the presence of those data. Pseudoscience claims exploit jargon to sound scientific, but the topics don’t stand up to scrutiny by the scientific community. Pseudoscience topics do not adhere to the scientific method and don’t undergo peer-review. Unfortunately, pseudoscience is a hallmark of the wellness industry, with claims that use a nugget of truth, but then extrapolate and exaggerate those truths well beyond what is real. Examples include pseudoscience medical conditions like leaky gut, adrenal fatigue, toxic mold syndrome; practices like homeopathy, iridology, chiropractic; and “therapies” like urotherapy, colloidal silver, and more. Pseudoscience can be very insidious and hard to discern from credible science, and it’s used to exploit people who are vulnerable. ➡️Watch the rest of @wired PSEUDOSCIENCE SUPPORT: https://youtu.be/vj71yGp-8WM?si=c2NZ9b6DQQieGC_L ➡️For more, subscribe to my newsletter: immunologic.substack.com #homeopathy #chiropractic #againstpseudoscience #toxicmold #evidencebased #datadriven #scientistlife #scicomm #factsonfacts #leakygut #adrenalfatigue #colloidalsilver #scienceeducation #health #womeninSTEM #factsoverfear #wellness #supplements #immunologist #scientist #sciencefacts #pseudoscience

Water is central to life. The fact that water is liquid at room temperature is a cosmic fluke that makes life possible (when you consider that Hydrogen Sulphide is a gas), and it is unsurprising that every society in the world has stories, myths and rules about water. This reel addresses the most common ones I see circulating on Indian social media. There are a few others I did not have time for. 1. You can drink water at whatever temperature you find comfortable. Hot/cold water has no special effects on your body. Remember that according to the Second law of thermodynamics, water at any temperature will reach 37 (your body temperature) by the time it reaches your stomach, so stop believing in all the hot/cold water myths 2. Water does not have “memory”, as some godmen will tell you. It forms hydrogen bonds, not spritual bonds 3. Alkaline water makes no sense. Our body’s pH is regulated tightly. You drinking alkaline water won’t do a damn thing. #reels #reelsofinstagram #mythbusters #pseudoscience #reelkarofeelkaro #water #science #foodscience #food #indianfood
