Fluktuasi ini terus memunculkan pasangan partikel virtual kuark–antikuark yang hidup sangat singkat. Mereka biasanya hilang sebelum sempat menjadi partikel nyata yang bisa diukur. Di Brookhaven National Laboratory, lewat Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, tim STAR Collaboration menabrakkan jutaan proton. Tujuannya mencari jejak apakah partikel “bayangan” ini bisa muncul sebagai materi nyata. Mereka menemukan pasangan lambda dan antilambda lahir sangat berdekatan. Yang mengejutkan, orientasi spin keduanya selalu selaras dengan pola yang sangat spesifik. Pola spin ini cocok dengan prediksi bahwa keduanya berasal dari pasangan kuark–antikuark di vakum. Artinya, data eksperimen menunjukkan transisi dari partikel virtual menjadi partikel nyata. Ini bukan klaim filosofis. Ini pola statistik dari jutaan peristiwa yang konsisten dengan teori vakum kuantum. Kalau dipikir-pikir, “kosong” ternyata ramai. Vakum yang kita bayangkan hampa justru penuh aktivitas tak kasat mata. Pas proton ditabrakkan dengan energi tinggi, pasangan partikel itu seperti mendapat kesempatan “menjadi nyata”. Dan jejaknya ketahuan lewat spin yang kompak, seolah sudah terhubung sejak awal. Sains di sini seperti membuka tirai level terdalam alam semesta. Araştırma ekibi, milyonlarca proton–proton çarpışmasını analiz ederek lambda hiperonu ve anti-lambda parçacık çiftlerinin spin (dönme) hizalanmasının istatistiksel olarak vakumdaki entegre sanal quark–antiquark çiftleriyle uyumlu olduğunu tespit etti. Bu spin hizalanması, bu parçacık çiftlerinin enerji dalgalanmalarıyla oluşan vakum sanal parçacıklarının “gerçek” maddenin temel bileşenlerine dönüştüğüne işaret ediyor. Çalışma, maddenin kuantum alanlarının dinamik doğası ve vakumdan nasıl ortaya çıktığı sorusuna yeni bir pencere açıyor.
