International Mother Language Day, observed every year on 21 February, was declared by UNESCO in 1999 to honour the 1952 Language Movement in Bangladesh, where students protesting for recognition of Bangla were killed. The day stands for linguistic diversity, multilingual education, and the right to speak without shame.
