That approach is now hitting a ceiling. A single game frame gets roughly 16 milliseconds of compute. A Hollywood VFX frame can take hours. No amount of raw GPU power was ever going to close that gap. NVIDIA just announced DLSS 5 at GTC, and it marks the clearest shift yet from traditional rendering to neural rendering. Instead of calculating every light interaction from scratch, the system feeds frame data into an AI model that predicts what the scene should look like with photorealistic lighting and materials. The AI handles what brute-force math cannot. Previous DLSS versions focused on performance. DLSS 5 targets visual quality itself. NVIDIA calls it the biggest graphics breakthrough since real-time ray tracing in 2018. The technology is still early and the announcement has been controversial, with critics arguing the AI alters character faces and overrides art direction rather than simply improving fidelity. NVIDIA says developers will have full control over the effect. But the direction is very clear here. We're moving to a future where graphics are no longer just being rendered... they are being predicted.
