VIDid you know one small mistake can completely change a word’s meaning?
Follow the 1-1-1 doubling rule to avoid spelling errors
Doubling Rule is when the base words of one syllable (1) ending in a single consonant (1) immediately preceded by a single vowel (1) double the consonant before a vowel suffix (-ing, -ed, -est, -y, -er) but not before a consonant suffix (-tion, -full).
For example:
shop — shopper, shopping, shoppable, shoppability (but not shops because we only double up with vowel suffixes)
run — runner, runner-up, running, runny → (y to i) runnier, runniest.
This is one of the important concepts we teach in our Phonics Workshop to help children improve reading and spelling skills.
