HAMuch like humans, each red wolf possesses a distinct personality. Some are more curious, others more playful or more stoic, yet all exhibit a striking resilience in the face of numerous threats. It is a resilience that inspires hope, not just for red wolves, but for a multitude of other endangered species struggling to persist in the modern era.

TRRed Wolf Juno gets special treats from our Zooies and plays a game of catch!
Juno became a grandmother one year ago when her daughter Flora gave birth to four critically endangered North American Red Wolves at the Trevor Zoo. With less than 300 red wolves surviving today, we are doing everything we can to ensure the future for this keystone species.

In fact, they are the most critically endangered canine species in the world. NCToday is a day worth howling for, especially for red wolves!🐺✨🔊
On this day, September 14, in 1987 eight red wolves born under human care were released into the wilds of Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge on North Carolina’s Albemarle Peninsula, for the very first time. Unbeknownst to them, these red wolves carried the future of their species on their shoulders. Today, 35 years later, only ten known red wolves roam the recovery area. The Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is the only place red wolves exist in the wild.
This special moment was captured in February 2021 of the red wolf pair on habitat at that time.

From Director Tousignant: “Our work with the red wolves, as well as the entire Red Wolf Recovery Program run by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is a concerted effort to try and re-stabilize populations in the wild. Pups born here at the Trevor Zoo could be introduced back into the wild in a process called cross-fostering, where a new wild wolf mother will be given captive born wolves to raise along with her own pups. This process has been successfully accomplished many times. The foster mom raises the pups so that they grow with no knowledge of humans, which is the best way for them to survive in their natural habitat.”
Red Wolves are a species that once thrived in significant numbers throughout southeastern North America but now only a handful currently reside in Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina. Along with other AZA zoos, our goal is to increase the population of red wolves so they can eventually be returned to the wild and help bring balance to ecosystems throughout their historic range.
In this clip, recorded yesterday afternoon, Flora is resting with the pups when the bell of our Flager Memorial Chapel rings, calling all students to Thursday evening’s Chapel Talk. As happens regularly when the bell rings, all the wolves at the zoo start to howl back - in this case Clifford, Juno and Chaco. Well, Flora doesn’t want to miss out on a good howl, so she leaves the pups for a moment, steps outside and joins in!

FOWhat does Fossil Rim do for American Red Wolves? 🐺⬇
Just 3 years ago, we expanded our behind-the-scenes red wolf area to accommodate more breeding pairs. Without additional space, the captive population cannot grow. Our hope is that soon we will be able to contribute pups for cross-fostering into wild litters.
Without this additional space, we would not have added Rue the red wolf to the population, and now that she is grown, she can hopefully contribute pups of her own.

WI“It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to take care of these animals,” Regina Mossotti, formerly of the Endangered Wolf Center said. While the gray wolf is the more common wolf breed in North America, the slightly smaller red wolf is the more at-risk species. In 1971, Host Marlin Perkins created the Endangered Wolf Center in Missouri to help red wolves. Still thriving today, the center’s goal is to help grow the numbers of this endangered species and eventually release the wolves back into the wild. GR🐺 The American Red Wolves are back in their newly renovated exhibit!
We’ve spent the last few months updating their space to give them more privacy and room to roam. Because every American Red Wolf in human care is managed as if they could be released into the wild, it’s important they have plenty of hiding spots and avoid getting habituated to humans.
The pack has already begun exploring their new habitat, but they’ll need a little time to settle in, so our close-up viewing area will remain temporarily closed. You can still spot them from afar, and stay tuned for ribbon-cutting news coming soon!
