MAHave you ever wondered why rockets take off vertically and not horizontally like airplanes?
Well, there’s a pretty important reason for that.
You see, Rockets are incredibly heavy — thousands of tons — and if you tried to tilt them sideways at launch, they would literally break under their own weight.
But even if they could hold together, rockets need to escape Earth’s gravity, and the fastest, most efficient way is straight up, where the atmosphere becomes thinner with altitude.

The Sea Dragon, proposed in 1962, was designed to be the largest rocket ever built — about 150 meters tall and 23 meters wide. Instead of launching from land, it would rise vertically from the sea, using the ocean as a natural launch platform to cut infrastructure and cost ⚙️🌍.
Envisioned as a two-stage super heavy-lift vehicle, the concept aimed to simplify construction by using thick steel tanks and sea-based launches rather than complex spaceport systems. The idea was led by aerospace engineer Robert Truax at Aerojet and drew serious attention at the time — but it never moved past the design phase.
