JASRV was known for playing so hard that he’d often break strings during live shows, especially the high E or B. When that happened, he wouldn’t stop the performance — his guitar tech, René Martinez, was a master at doing seamless swaps. René would run onstage with another Strat (often tuned and set up the same way), and SRV would keep the groove going while swapping guitars mid-song, sometimes even mid-solo.
One iconic example: during “Look at Little Sister” at the El Mocambo show, he pops a string, and you can see the swap happen without missing a beat. Most people would’ve stopped the show. SRV didn’t. He kept playing, bleeding and grinning through the rest of the set like nothing happened.
