Before we started going on safari, we thought lions would be the animals to fear… but after everything we learned & experienced, it’s the elephants, hippos, buffalo, and even giraffes that left us more on edge. Lions? As long as you’re in a vehicle and follow your guide’s instructions, they hardly give you a second glance. They don’t see you as prey, and attacks on safari vehicles are extremely rare — the chances are so low, they’re almost non-existent. But then there’s the elephant. Majestic, intelligent… and absolutely massive. While they’re incredible to watch, they can also be unpredictable, especially when a mother feels her calf is threatened or a bull is in musth (a hormonal state that can make them extremely aggressive). We had a few close encounters that definitely got the heart rate up. Hippos are another story entirely. They’re one of the deadliest animals in Africa, responsible for a huge number of human deaths each year — mostly because of how territorial and quick they are, especially near water. Learning about the force behind those jaws (and seeing them up close) gave us a whole new respect for them. Then there’s the buffalo — especially the older, solitary males known as “dugaboys.” These guys are famously grumpy, unpredictable, and have charged safari vehicles before. Guides are incredibly cautious around them, and for good reason — they’re considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa and are responsible for a significant number of deaths annually. Even giraffes, which seem so gentle and graceful, gave us pause. Watching two males battle by swinging their necks like sledgehammers was wild. While they’re no threat from a vehicle, you definitely wouldn’t want to be on foot if they were agitated — their sheer strength and size are something else. The more we learned, the more our perspective shifted. Safari teaches you not just to admire these animals — but to truly respect their power, their instincts, and their space. And perhaps most importantly, responsible safaris directly support conservation, helping to protect these incredible animals and the habitats they depend on 🙌🏼 #safarilife #africanwildlife #animalconservation
