Interpolation in music is when an artist recreates or replays part of an existing song—like a melody, chord progression, or lyrics—rather than directly sampling the original recording.
Instead of copying the original audio, the artist records their own version of that part and uses it in a new song.
Key difference:
• 🎧 Sampling = using the actual original recording
• 🎹 Interpolation = recreating it yourself
Artists use interpolation to:
• Reference a classic song
• Add nostalgia or familiarity
• Avoid using the original audio while still keeping the idea
Even though it’s re-recorded, interpolation still usually requires permission from the original songwriters.

LUmost important note in the song? 😳 The piano bassline sampled from 1977’s “Mind Rain” by Joe Chambers (who performs the part as well) sounds dark and sinister: why? In part this is because of the use of a b2, a flattened 2nd scale degree in the Phyrigian mode, one of 2 notes that do not appear in major or minor scales. While used with some frequency in classical, jazz, and metal (as well as arabic, flamenco, middle eastern, klezmer and other musics) it was far less common to hear this scale outside of those genres in 1994.
In Chambers’ bassline as sampled and looped every bar in Nas’s song we hear a tritone in the melody at the top - from the flat 2 to the 5, a leading tone pushing downwards, wanting to resolve to the tonic (also note no b3 is played in the riff - only in the “sting” chord heard every 2 bars).
Some earlier famous phrygian songs include: Jefferson airplane White rabbit; the Clash london calling; kelis milkshake; Montell Jordan “This is How We Do it” (and of course “Childrens Story” by Slick Rick, which Jordan’s song samples). In 1994 “NY State of Mind” and Snoop Dogg “Gin & Juice” both used Phrygian, and soon after we began hearing it more in hip hop: Missy Elliott - Get Ur Freak On, kendrick DNA, Humble, Childish Gambino - This Is America, Lil Uzi Vert - Just Wanna Rock etc.
In 2022 Oberlin musicologist Eron Smith wrote the article “Flat 2 as Hotness in post-millenial pop”, which collected 75 examples of flat 2 usage as a musical expression of “hotness” (“confidence, sexuality, or both”) eg: justin “sexyback” , miley cyrus “cant’t be tamed”, Britney if you seek amy, and songs by christina aguilera, beyonce, rihanna, shakira, pussycat dolls etc. It is far more common to hear a b2 in pop now than it was when Nas’ song was released.

EDMoby’s “Porcelain” is a masterclass in emotional sampling, built around a reversed string section taken from Ernest Gold’s Fight for Survival (1960).
By flipping just a few chords backwards, he created that iconic “breathing” effect that gives the track its haunting, weightless atmosphere. Paired with subtle drum patterns and gospel-inspired vocals, the result feels both intimate and cinematic.
What makes the story even crazier is that Moby nearly left the track off Play entirely, calling it “mushy” and unfinished. Instead, it became one of his most defining records, capturing the feeling of loving someone you know you have to let go.
Over two decades later, “Porcelain” still stands as one of electronic music’s most timeless and emotional productions.

Here’s a great excerpt from ‘Discovering Electronic Music’, an educational short film from 1983 directed by Bernard Wilets which looks at the early use of electronics in music production.
The Australian-produced Fairlight CMI, first available in 1979, was the first polyphonic digital sampling synthesizer. Costing roughly $30k in the early 80s (that’s about $125,418.51 adjusted for inflation in January ‘26) not everyone could get their hands on one! However it would be used by artists like of Kate Bush, Tears for Fears, and Peter Gabriel. It featured a light pen, video monitor, and the ability to sample, manipulate, and sequence sounds.
The ability to digitally reproduce acoustic instruments and sample any sound opened up completely new ideas of exploration musicians. Before digital recording became practical, instruments like the Welte Lichttonorgel in the 1930s, Phonogene in the 1950s and the Mellotron in the 1960s, used analog optical disks or analog tape decks to play back sampled sounds. The emergence of the digital sampler made sampling far more practical.

If the volume of each track were set at equal gain , it will produce a cluttered image. Determine which sounds should be in the front & which should be in the back. Create depth by adjusting the volume of each track.
Any stereo mix must also work well in mono.

INYe - LAST BREATH, BULLY (2026)
In February 2025 at his private RSVP party in Los Angeles after the Grammy Awards, Ye previewed a few new tracks from his upcoming album BULLY, with “LAST BREATH” being one of them.
Sampling Poncho Sánchez’s “Bésame Mamá” on the intro, Ye sings his interpolation of the lyrics in Spanish. Consequence also recorded a reference for the track, though it’s almost certain he’s not the voice in the final version. With an extended preview later shared at his wife Bianca Censori’s film premiere later that same month.
Drifting away from Kanye’s typical sound, the track leans into Latin pop, reminiscent of “DRUNK” from his collaborative album with Ty Dolla $ign, VULTURES 2.
Fully produced by Ye, BULLY’s tracklist was revealed by him on X today. With 18 songs in the tracklist, are we ready for Ye’s return?
