D.For years, I was embarrassed to even tell people I got laid off. I really did not want anybody to know. It was hard because my story looked completely different at first.
I went from playing Division 1 college football to getting a corporate job offer my last semester in college. I graduated, moved straight to Dallas, and got right to work. On the outside, it looked like everything was going according to plan. I was working in IT, hosting panels with the CFO, getting flown out to speak, and being part of financial literacy events. It seemed like I was building the life I always saw for myself.
Then life hit different.
If you have ever been laid off before, then you know that feeling. Once that severance package runs out and the checks stop coming every two weeks, it gets real. Then to make it worse, even when you know you are qualified, you start getting denial after denial for months while the bills still keep coming.
While I was in corporate America, I got my real estate license to make money on the side and eventually create my way out. But a lot of times, we have our dreams and goals mapped out one way until God makes us go His way.
I would be lying if I said I never had moments where I felt down or doubted myself. I had those moments. But through it all, I learned what faith really is. I learned what it means to trust God when all you have is Him. A lot of us pray for big goals, big opportunities, and a bigger life, but we are not always willing to go through the process that comes with it.
For a while, I kept asking why all of this was happening to me. Now I cannot do anything but thank God because I see He was shaping me into the person I am today. What felt like a setback was really part of the molding.
I do not have it all figured out, but I can honestly say I am better than I was before and I know it is only going to get better from here.
So if you have been laid off, if life has humbled you, or if you are still trying to figure things out, I want you to know this: it is okay. Keep your faith. Keep going. As long as you have God by your side, He will not let you fail.

ADNIL changed everything. Education didn’t keep up. 🎯 In 2021 college athletes were handed the ability to profit off their name, image, and likeness for the first time in history. It was a monumental shift for sports. But the infrastructure to support it — the financial literacy, the contract knowledge, the brand education — was never built alongside it.
And athletes are paying the price for that gap every single day.
Bad deals. Mismanaged money. Brands that exploit young athletes who don’t know what to ask or what to look for. This isn’t about blaming athletes — it’s about acknowledging that we handed them something powerful without giving them the tools to use it responsibly.
Coaches and educators are on the front lines of this. The conversation about NIL has to start before the offers do. If we’re serious about protecting young athletes we have to be serious about education first 🙏

NIL has changed the landscape of college sports as a whole and just because you have some bread doesn’t mean real conversations are dead. Stop worrying about the next man, what he’s got and how he’s handling his business. The shoes, clothes, your bros, and these 304’s will be there. When you’re focused on things like: Investing your money into your craft, paying your taxes, helping your community and giving back to the less fortunate, that’s what keeps your mind off what the next man is doing or saying. If you know you have money coming in monthly, that doesn’t mean just blow it because you know you’ll have it again next pay check and you end up needing a loan from your agent, teammate, parents, etc. that’s hustling completely backwards, save your money and it’ll save you. There are more players in college football right now worried about whose chain is bigger than who can make the lane bigger for the next generation and it’s not right but it’s up to us as: coaches, trainers, mentors, big brothers, uncles, to tell ya’ll that we have to do better young kings and I’m holding ya’ll accountable for it to, fasho. #WordsFromCoachSteph 🗣️💯
